The show started well with Les Patterson being his dreadful self, spraying the first row of the audience with spit. The jokes were good and the audience were going along well with it. Then came ‘Peter and the Shark’, the Australian version of ‘Peter and the Wolf’. There were some funny moments, but not many.
For the second half Dame Edna Everage entertained us. This also started well, with Edna taking the rise out of the people in the upper circle and some at the front. Then we were given a thirty-minute, musical rendition of the history of Australia. Very little of which was entertaining.
During the second half people started leaving in quite large numbers, to the extent that my wife and I felt quite embarrassed for Barry Humphries.
On a positive note. Carl Davies and his orchestra were excellent. I suppose, given the title of the show, it should have been realised that it would have a lot of music, but I think it was poorly promoted. Maybe if it was titled ‘The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra with Dame Edna Everage and Les Patterson’ the audience would have gone with different expectations. Please Barry, stick with what people expect of you and what you are really good at and the audience will love you.
