It´s always worthwile travelling all the way from Denmark to visit London, but this time our stay was highlighted by an amazing concert with John Mayall and his outstanding band in Jazz Café, Camden. If you thought you would find an old, tired and worn out man after months on the road with a gig almost every night, you were wrong!

With incredible energy for a musician of 77, John Mayall gave us a mixture of songs from his very first album in 1967 to the latest from 2009. You felt that in every song he kept on finding new possibilities of expressing himself, although he must have performed most of them hundreds of times. Mayalls friendly and smiling attitude towards the audience as well as towards his band members really made everybody feel good.

Personally, I prefer the sound of the Bluesbreakers he performed with during eight years until 2008, to the sound of his present band, but really Mayall has a rare nose for picking up some excellent musicians. Rocky Athas on guitar seemed to enjoy every solo he played. Greg Rzab on bass has a funny lazy attitude when playing, but his solos were awesome. Tom Canning on organ has been playing with Mayall on many occasions, and judging from his smiles, he enjoys every minute with the old master. Davenport on drums is just rock-solid and plays with such concentration that nothing ever went wrong.

And Mayall himself. Wow - harmonica, piano, and his singing better than ever!

Saw John Mayall at Cambridge in 1969 and 1970 as an undergraduate. Have played his music ever since especially California from The Turning Point and So Hard to share. Saw him at the Jazz Cafe 31st July 2008. Was frankly worried I was living in the past and would be sorely disappointed. How wrong can you be he was incredible.
Saw him again in 2010 and both times had an immensely enjoyable evening. In 2008 there was the added spice of a long surrise appearance by Mick Taylor.
Feel privileged to have been present at yet another great performance.
Hope to see him again soon

This was the 9th time I'd seen the great man, and absolutely the best gig since the very first time I saw him, in the Orford Arms in Norwich in 1965, touring the 'Live at Kllooks Kleek' set, as I recall.

This latest band has really re-juvenated John (the old Buddy Whiitington band was getting pretty stale, I thought, although the 100 Club gig was pretty good).

The new band harks back to those early Bluesbreakers - all great musicians, brilliant guitarist, really solid drum and bass, and and good to have the second keyboard. The rapport in the band is great to see, and the rapport with the audience was brilliant at the Jazz Cafe gig - one of the best gigs I've ever been to there.

Like being in the Flamingo in 1966. Mayall's band is outstanding. Lead guitar, keyboards, bass, drums, all could find a place in any of the great blues/rock bands from the 1960s to now. And the Jazz Cafe is a national treasure with an atmosphere all its own. Don't let anyone corporatise it or change it (and there are those who are planning just that). It will become just another O2 or characterless venue. The Jazz Cafe is rare, we should keep it that way.

A lot of people in a crowded Jazz Cafe last night were much too young to have seen, maybe even to know about, the great Bluesbreakers bands of Eric Clapton, Peter Green and Mick Taylor. It took the charismatic John Mayall, opening the set with a harmonica solo, no time to have them eating out of his hand - and when the band appeared and launched into Otis Rush's 'All Your Love' the audience was captivated and remained so for the next two hours. Not often do you see band and audience so obviously having a great time. These are musicians who know how to please a crowd and are very, very good at what they do. If Mayall comes back - and I'm sure he will - don't miss him.
