First time at refurbished Roundhouse - great atmospheric venue. However, it would have helped to know that there is a choice of balcony or floor and be offered tickets accordingly (you cannot go upstairs if you have a "floor" ticket).
Support act, Kassidy, were excellent. Just the sort of rousing folk/indie-rock crossover to get the crowd going. Punchy mix of Kings of Leon, Crosby Stills & Nash and Eagles with the look of an all-male Magic Numbers. Definitely a group to watch out for.
Noah and the Whale started with the quick-fire "Love of an Orchestra" - very reminiscent of James' "Getting away with it" - but then went rapidly downhill. It seemed as though they were trying to reject the very style that captured so many fans a year or so back, by pretendfing to be a heavy rock band complete with the stilted mannerisms, poses and incoherence of that genre. By the end of their sixth song (which just sounded identical to the the previous four) they had lost much of the audience. Having moved to the back, I found that most people were just ignoring them and just talking, texting and yawning. Not helped by the complete lack of charisma or any attempt to engage the audience by the band. Oh dear!!
It did get better - as they returned to their back catalogue/first album and made more use of the brass section and girl choir. With their last 5-6 songs - including their three encore items - were a lot more in tune with audience and their strengths. They just about rescued what would have otherwise have been a one star gig - the most disappointing I've been to in years.
Such a shame they cannot build a whole set based on that quirky "Belle & Sebastian- esque style that first caught my attention - and learn to engage more with the crowd.
