Joe Longthorne's show at the Alexandra Theatre was a wonderful evening of song, laughter and fun from Britain's best singer and variety performer. He was unfortunately about 45 minutes late, probabaly due to traffic delays on the motorway but he more than made up for it with a staggering mind blowing performance of nearly 2 hours. He did appear to be suffering from a slight cold but this is no way affected his performance or willingness to entertain us all. I thought he looked very fit and well and his appearance was immaculate in a well cut black suit with a matching black top.
We were treated to an amazing selection of songs old and new, opening with the classic "September In The Rain", "How Do You Keep The Music Playing", "Nobody Till Somebody Loves You" and "Love Is In The Air" plenty of audience particiaption on this one.
Joe had the audience well within the palm of his hand and proceeded to wow us with faultless vocal impressions of the likes of Neil Diamond, Barry Manilow,Sammy Davis,Tony Bennett, the list goes on and on not forgetting probably the most famous of them all Dame Shirley Bassey , all these performed to perfection, no props required for this man with the golden voice, just listen to his magic.
I was delighted to hear two new songs from Joe, two Bee Gees songs "I Started a Joke" and "The Morning of My LIfe" , he performed these with the customary Longthorne magic and genius and I look forward to these perhaps being included on a future CD by Joe.
He also entertained us at the piano with a number of songs and impressions showing us all another side of his immense talents. The evening ended with a loving tribute to Elvis with "In The Ghetto" and "Wonder of You" followed by "The Impossible Dream".
The audience were immediately on their feet with a rapturous lengthy standing ovation before Joe, after receiving flowers and gifts , left the stage.
It is always a pleasure to go and see Joe perform ,I have never ever been disappointed, and I always leave the venue knowing I have seen a very clever, special and talented performer, very unique and individual in his style, if you've never experienced the Longthorne magic live you don;t know what you are missing.
