This was my second visit to Belladrum and, with a couple of years between the two, I found the format changed much more in favour of the "family friendly" festival this year than before.
So much so, in fact, that by the mid afternoon I was wishing I had brought my niece along just so I had something interesting to do!
I was dissapointed that there was no programmes left by the time we arrived on saturday. Surely if the organisers were aware that the festival was completely sold out, they would then have an indication of the number of programmes required!
Unfortunately, all the music acts I was there to see were playing at the same time. Acts could have been better staggered, I feel, to give people a chance to see more than a couple of songs from each stage.
I can't help but think that I could have gotten more for my money had I been able to plan my day from a programme and make the neccessary compromises with other members of my party in advance. For example..,'I'll put up with the Saw Doctors if you miss the start of Noah & the Whale so I can listen to a few De Votchka songs.'sort of thing.
"The best burger you'll ever taste" took so long to defrost and then finally cook that I wished I had gone for the middle of the road but more honestly advertised ones for sale in the stall next door. Not least because you become far too aware of the loose festival approach to food hygiene when you're kept waiting that long but also 'cause it made me miss the start of Edward II, who turned out to be the first act so far that actually sounded a bit different from all the other nameless middle of the road fare I'd wandered aimlessly in and out of.
Phill Lee is still as 'cool' as ever. The Dangleberries are still as loud as ever!
Noah & the Whale couldn't even be bothered to fill their whole slot on stage which at least meant I could catch the end of the very sweet Lost Brothers .
Alex Cornish was dull. De Votchka were fantastic but saw more of them sound testing than performing due to afore mentioned compromise and no programme issues. The Saw Doctors were ....well, everyone loves the Saw Doctors. Even I enjoyed most of it and usually have to be very very drunk to appreciate that sort of music.
Thank God Seth Lakeman and his sexy little fiddle saved the day with a brilliant set. I fell in love with his er ... talents at my last -and more successfull-outing at Belladrum and he did not dissapoint this year. Will definately be looking out for his next tour!
Cannot mention any others 'cause I either missed them or 'didnay ken' who they were.
I know ye can't please everyone all of the time and I also know I'm not easy pleased.
This is why I would still recommend this festival to friends with kids 'cause there was a big sea of happy nautical themed faces and a lovely friendly, laid back atmosphere in spite of us mysery guts who need an Itinery for life and the odd person who perhaps used a few too many drink tokens to pass the time with.Plenty for kids to do and a good contingency for the weather although luckily not needed this year.
