Ricky Gervais - Science Tour 2009 - Manchester Apollo - Thursday 12th November 2009
I am a massive Ricky Gervais fan. I have loved not only all his previous stand ups but also his TV shows and Podcasts. I have wanted to see him live for a number of years and was thrilled to finally get tickets this year after failing to get them for his 'Fame' tour a few years ago.
'Science' is his latest show and will also be the last one I watch. What a disappointment. He talked of 'Britains Got Talent', the 9/11 attacks, a Ken Dodd show, Noahs Ark and not much else. None of what he talked about was current and I left feeling that none of the jokes told were new at all. Around 20 minutes of the show were dedicated to retelling the 'Noah' story, where the basic gist was that it couldn't possibly be true as there are millions and millions of different species of animal and they wouldn't ft on the ark....bla bla isn't this what he talked about in his first stand up tour ''Animals''
I left feeling like he didn't want to be there and couldn't be bothered. At the end he apologises for the show having nothing to do with Science at all....which basically summed up the whole show. A waste of my time and money.

I have seen all his DVD's and downloaded all podcasts, so knew what to expect.
He certainly lived up to his billing. On form throughout.
Great support in Stewart Francis too.

The material was crude and disgusting. Gervais repeated said his intent was "not to offend" but he did, repeatedly. There was virtually nothing in the routine which related to the title "Science". In addition, the whole show gave the impression that Gervais has put little effort into the material. I won't be going to see Gervais again.

From the support comedian through to the encore I laughed so much my jaw ached. No taboo is out of the question, and the easily offended should stay away... contains a wee bit of swearing! The open minded among us will love it. Would happily go and see the same show again!

Went to Ricky Gervais at the Apollo was really excited as we were sat on the second row, there was a warm up act which surprised me, as been to Al Murray, Eddie Izzard and Jimmy Carr recently and they went straight on.
RG was very funny and enjoyed the show, but he was only on for just over an hour, 68 minutes to be exact!! felt a bit disappointed really

Really enjoyed, he kept his audience entertainined for a good couple of hours !!!! Fantastic story of Noah and the Ark!!!!
The Apollo is a great venue, however if you are over 5ft 5, the seats are very tight!!!!

the gig only lasted an hour and a quarter and he's running out of good material he even repeated a joke from his last stand up dvd about the goat.
just not as funny as his first two stand ups animals and politics, support act stuart francis was very good though. for 35 quid a ticket not great value considering we watched rhod gilbert for 15 quid and he did well over 2 hours

After seeing about 5 different stand ups this year, I can safely say Ricky ranked about 4th or 5th. There were flashes of brilliance but this did not compare to any of his previous material and his time on stage felt very much like a smash and grab....A shout to the older man sat to our left who fell asleep....
Overall it was a good night but I've seen better this year, by a long way!!

Despite a somewhat disappointing review in the Manchester Metro, this was Ricky Gervais at his top-class best!
This was my first "live" experience of a Gervais tour and I left wanting more! He is truly one of our funniest entertainers and this show was packed full of great material. In terms of the tour title of "Science", it had little or nothing to do with the show, which incidentally he admitted to at the midway point, but who cares?!
The show was nothing short of hilarious and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a top class laugh out loud experience!

Unfortunately, my view was restricted due to the venue being choka-blocked. In future, I'll probably rather wait and buy the DVD. The support act was very funny. I had neck-ache by the end of it. I still have back-ache because of the restricted view. It may aswell have been a radio performance.

Waiting for this event we were really exicted, we are big fans but the show did not stack up. Firstly Science was simply a title which was in itself a let down as rather cleverly with previous shows such as Politics Gervais has used his wit and personal view of life to bring home the comedy. However, it was almost as though he could not be bothered preparing for this show, and to boot for £35 each he was on stage for just over one hour 15 minutes, his constant reference to how well he has done so far in his career was amusing, but by the end of the show it seems that he was pointing out the fact that he can do the minimum and people will still roll up to see him. Still admire the guy but dissapointed in the show over too soon and not so funny. Must try harder Mr Gervais!!
