The play was spell binding and superbly acted by the whole cast. As soon as he opened his mouth, Lenny Henry was Othello. His award was certainly well deserved.

Othello is not my favourite Shakespeare play but this was a wonderful production. Lenny Henry is amazing in the part and once you get past the waiting for him to break out with a joke, etc, you are totally absorbed. He played the jealous Moor totally believably and only at the curtain call did we see that familiar broad smile. It was a moving and impressive performance. Don't miss it.

Very well casted and have to say Lenny Henry was excellent. Not knowing the story and trying to keep up with the words it was very apparent how good the acting was at impassing the passion and tragegy of the story whilst pouring out the extensive narration. Would recommend this to anyone.

The production was really good, but i couldn't hear Iago and it's Iago who does all the scheming. People around me couldn't catch his words either and I don't think everyone was deaf, -it's left me having to go to my book to read up on Iago's speeches which is a shame. Lenny Henry was fabulous -as he got more manic the more convincing he became. He really deserves the newcomers award to West End theatre

There is no doubt that Lenny Henry has a remarkable talent or that there was real power in his performance. It remains to be discovered whether these can be realized again. What is also most memorable from this production is the subtle and sustained Iago who succeeded in making himself detestable. The ensemble was consistent and very, very good.

Love Lenny, love Shakespeare, LOVED this!
Lenny has so much stage presence that I thought it would be hard to see him in this role. But the rest of the cast performed so amazingly that we were soon captivated.
Excellent drinking game scene allowed us to have a chuckle (without Lenny).
The venue is perfect for classic performances and the stage setting strikingly simple and effective.
The only negative was that some members of the audience (not many) laughed at inappropriate times - Othello epileptic fit scene and grief after he had killed his wife - the fault of the audience members not the performance; which had me and my 17 and 25 year old daughters spellbound.
The 'real' Lenny came on again at the end, as if for an encore - to give an extra bow for the cast - and the thumbs up! Wonderful!

This was the first time I had seen this Shakespeare play. I wondered how someone I had known as a comedian would fare in the role of Othello.. I needn't have worried, I could believe in his character, he filled the role well. Great stage presence, I was impressed by his range of expression. Lago was entirely believable sewing his poison, devious and duplicitous.
The setting was simple with two sets of doors I set louvered and the other panelled Other parts of scenery are trucked on and off as needed. To make the production accessible to the deaf the production is "subtitled" on a moving message display flown in high - centre stage. From my view from near the back I found these slightly disturbing to start, however it was useful when I was momentarily disturbed but could "catch up"!
I think this is a fine production well worth seeing, but hurry, the run ends Dec 12th!

The refurbished Trafalgar Studio is great - good accoustics, good visibilty from all seats, friendly and helpful staff and easy to get to from Charing X Tube.
The show was top notch, Lenny has a great speaking voice, he makes a very good Othello with huge stage presence, and is ably supported by the rest of the cast, particularly the slimy, devious but horribly persuasive Iago of Conrad Nelson.
See it before it finishes!

If you can, go and see this before it finishes in a couple of weeks time. It is a fabulous production. Lenny Henry is awesome as Othello and Conrad Nelson has to be the best Iago I've seen. They work really well together and pull off a very polished performance. Of course I went to see Lenny and he did not disappoint. Word perfect and lots of stage presence. A big, beautiful man with a big, beautiful voice! For me, he is as I have always imagined Othello to be. Once I'd got over expecting him to make me laugh every 5 minutes, he had me enthralled ......... but it was still great to see him take his curtain call as Lenny the comic! Well done Lenny, you pulled it off and then some!

What a performance! The disintegration of a great man, manipulated and deceived, by someone he trusted. Lenny Henry was a big presence in every sense, Conrad Edwards terrific as the conniving Iago, the other company members equally as convincing. A great afternoon, the smaller than usual venue increased the palpable tension among the audience, I wasn't the only person on the edge of their seat.

Intense, passionate, sometimes difficult to watch as you see how jealousy can consume a man....
A very direct and considered account of this story and a great actor to play the part of Othello.
Even if you dont know shakespeare that well (as i dont) it is a story that grips you and is like a book you can't put down or a film that you can't look away from.

It's not easy for tv/film celebs to tackle serious theatre, and it doesn't get much more serious than the "big" Shakespeare roles. All the theatre critics and half the audience are just waiting with glee for them to fall flat on their faces.
Well, Mr. Henry may fall on his sword at the end, but he certainly doesn't fall on his face, acquitting himself admirably with a good command of the verse and an impressively powerful delivery. A good production and a credible Iago (not always the case) complete an enjoyable Othello.
Only downside was the silly girl's mobile that kept going off, who deserved the same fate as Desdemona!

Excellent performances, as far as they were allowed, by those portraying Othello, Rodrigo and the somewhat unorthodox Iago (slimy rather than scheming, distasteful rather than loathsome) but all let down by the production. The lighting was over-subdued to the point of irritation, the moments of tension, especially any build-up, was not choreographed and 2-1/2 hours is too long for a play to be performed on bare floorboards with minimal props. Desdemona came alive just in time to die, but given the part, did so extremely well. Shame really, given the presence of Lenny Henry and the ill-taste in the mouth of the interpretation of Iago, this production deserved more (maybe I was just spoilt by seeing Twelfth Night at Stratford the night before). All hail the cast, shoot the production team!

After our initial surprise of hearing a shakespere play spoken with northern accents we soon settled into this play. Iago was very believable, his duplicity obvious to the audience, even if not well acquainted with the play. Lenny Henry made a really credible Othello, if at times a little gruff. Well worth watching!

I really wanted to see Lenny Henry act in a serious role, he was an influential comedian during my youth. I was not familliar with the play but it was expertly produced and the character portral was stunning. The studio added to the experience as it was small and intimate so I felt part of the play
