The organisation and staff were fine and the setting is lovely, but customers should be aware that the advertised children and toddlers area is a) tiny b) accessible only by going either 80% of the way round the rink or 20% of the way around against the flow which was virtually impossible and c) had, by 3pm, a completely dreadful surface such that it was near impossible to skate on. The main rink was polished between each session but this didn't appear to happen at all in the children's area. The advertised ice marshalls were only in evidence later on in the session and I didn't see them in the toddler area at all.
There was also no provision for younger children on this area such as a lower handrail or stabilisers (like the Bobo penguins used in York). As a result, especially combined with the poor surface, the area was completely filled with children and adults constantly falling over and was fairly unpleasant.
The rink would be dramatically improved by the provision of a separate access to the toddler area and by better maintenance of this area. As it is I would NOT recommend this activity for pre-school children unless they already know how to skate or are accompanied by an adult who is very confident on the ice. As a result I paid the best part of a tenner for my toddler to sit and watch. Fortunately we had a 'spare' adult not skating with us so that we didn't have to waste an adult ticket too.
My 8 year old, on the other hand, absolutely LOVED the experience.
