This event was my first experience of The Manchester Opera House and it was certainly a high alltitude pursuit. The steep climb to our seats and resulting lack of oxygen and the fact that we were very nearly late for the kick off heightened our anticipation and lent the evening a somewhat surreal, heady atmosphere. Not that we needed any other influences, Antony quite simply takes you there.
At first, taking in the image of him standing centre stage in a long, white dress behind a gauze screen, one was not quite sure if he was really there. And the accompanying music, sounding so round and warm was nowhere to be seen. It all felt quite disorienting, it just wasn't logical somehow.
I must put my expectation in context, I assumed this would be a straightforward 'gig', when I bought the tickets I didn't even check, so when the physical performer/dancer was introduced to the stage before Antony and the Johnsons, I have to be honest, my heart sank. While I appreciate the skill of the performancer, it felt all wrong and gave me an opportunity to audience-watch, catch up with my companion of the evening, dig out my fan from the bowels of my handbag (it was a mighty hot evening) and generally do anything but engage with the dance piece.
So, onto the enigma.... he is so freaky and sweet and weird, his voice is from another place or planet altogether, eventually, I just assumed that he could conjure up the beautiful instrumentation by the sheer force of his oddness and that's when I surrendered completely! I drifted along side by side with Antony, you see he was singing to me! There is such a confessional intimacy not only to his words, but in his delivery, it's almost naiive and too raw sometimes, I want him to protect himself just a little, but so glad he doesn't.
Two or three songs before the end, the backcloth was raised and Lo! there was the orchestra, they had worked mighty hard all evening and it was such a joy to finally see them. Further illustrating the fact that Antony, on his own with no instruments or props had kept an entire audience spellbound for over an hour. Just Antony, his long, white dress and his mic stand. Genius!!
