Based on what I recalled was a serious Alfred Hitchcock movie (although in retrospect he was probably acting tongue in cheek), this play is a ridiculous, silly, charming and fun parody. For the most part, it closely follows the movie's plot and dialogue, but with a great deal of goofy sets and cheap special effects thrown in. It is by no means high drama or fine theater, but its cast of four (who collectively play more than a dozen different parts) are obviously having a blast and their enthusiasm is infectious. I recommend that you book a seat as close to the stage as possible to enjoy this play at its fullest. This is fun for the whole family.

I had already been told how good the production was and it did not disapoint. We felt worn out for Mr Hanney. So much action. There was never a dull moment and must be worth going again to see the bits you missed as the pace of the show never let up.
Very clever direction and use of comedy props.

Funny, slick, clever, my dad and I loved it, and our french friend got the jokes too. The play has a recognisable story which races along. The characters played are wonderful caricatures and the energy of the four actors is palpable.

Strange this email turned up just when I was thinking through the show again - for about the fiftieth time!
My review is simple - I thought it was the funniest show ever, and the staging, economy of scenery, and of course the comedy turns were all sensational.
I had a good feeling about it from the moment I saw the poster a while ago, but when I got to the wonderful Criterion Theatre and watched the opening strobe moments, I was totally hooked. The two Stephens were fantastic, just like they were doing the show in front of critics for the first time. John played his God-given role to perfection, and Natalie was gorgeous!
I pinched some postcards from the bar and have already posted them to friends.
I want to share the moment - true theatre, without the glitz, without the hydraulics, but with talent in spades.
You've probably already guessed, I loved it...

This show was fantastic. I was unsure as to whether we would enjoy this but after reading lots of reviews and with some personal recommendations i booked this for my husbands birthday. Well, i am so pleased i did. We laughed from beginning to end. It is one of the best plays we have seen and i am pleased i decided to go for a play rather than the usual musical. With only four actors playing over 130 roles this was fascinating to watch and very cleverly performed. They did an amazing job and were extremely funny. The theatre is small enough that i think you can get a good view of the stage from wherever you sit (possible exception are the boxes). We sat in the dress circle and had fab views. This is a short play - 90 minutes with a 15 minute interval - time flew by and before we knew it this great performance came to an end. I would highly recommend this to anyone - suitable for all ages.

We got tickets for this as we could not agree on anything else. I am glad we did! We did not know it was a comedy when we booked, but right from the start we were entertained by an imaginative and creative direction.
Lively acting from all, the show being performed by a cast of 4 (except for the 5th man?!!)
So many memorable moments, the cast must be exhausted after each show but I would highly recomend this show! Funny, original, and a real wow! factor.

Booked the tickets last minute as needed a Friday night out, didn't realise it was a comedy until we saw the sign outside! I had tried to watch the BBC version earlier this year and only made it 20 minutes in so was a bit dubious! Also took a very picky mother with me who loves the films so it was fingers crossed!
Well, best night out in years! Laughed from start to finish! All of the actors were amazing and their comic timing was imaculate! The origional story was well told with all of the main components included. Still a great spy story and gripping, but the script, direction and acting kept us rolling til the end. Also a great job done by the brilliant stage hands with all the props and perfect timing.

This show was thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining. The script was clever and funny without being silly but I think it was the direction that made it so good with memorable scenes from the film re-enacted with panache and humour without losing track of the story. You do need to be familiar with the film to get the most out of it which some of the audience obviously weren't. The cast worked extremely hard to produce (almost) seamless performances. I would happily see this again

This is a very funny, entertaining and clever show. We (my 15 year old daughter and I) loved the costume changes, the witty jokes - verbal and visual- and the fast pace. To tell you the best bit would be to give the surprise away!
Not a profound story but a great lesson in performance.

We all really enjoyed the 39 Steps. The cast were excellent especially Stephen Ventura who played the Memory Man and the Scottish hotel owner. The play was fast paced and very funny. A definate recommendation.
The Kids Week Activity was not as advertised in the Kids Week information, but a Q& A, which although was good, a quick back stage tour would have been fantastic for our 8 year old.

Clever and funny interpretation of the Hitchcock film rather than the Buchan novel. 4 actors play all the roles with aplomb. Witty use of minimal props and great physical comedy provide most of the laughs. Plus the spot the Hitchcock film references add an enjoyable extra layer for film fans. The Criterion theatre is utterly charming and adds to the pre-war setting of the show.

I managed to drag my reluctant 14 year old son away from his playstation for an afternoon of "civilised" entertainment. Not knowing what to expect, we settled comfortably into our seats and for the next hour and three quarters were transported back to the 1930's for a rip roaringly funny murder mystery adventure tale, jam-packed with quick changes (a cast of 4 playing multiple roles) and very many funny scenarios including a roof top chase on the flying scotsman ,Richard Hannay's amazing escape from a rural highland hotel, all leading up to an outstanding finale.
We did not stop laughing from start to finish.
We would both thoroughly recommmend thisto families with slightly older children (10+)
