Rap is a genre of music in which performers can quickly stop being flavour of the month.
This can be because the sound that they have is no longer current, the way they rhyme or the subject matter is no longer 'cool' or they go mainstream and never really have a core audience.
This has never been the case for Masta Ace, he has just always been a rap fans rapper.
If you have listened to rap music in the last 20 years you will have heard of Masta Ace, he has enough 'underground' hits to have your head nodding until it almost falls off.
Born to Ride, Beautiful, Brooklyn Masala. They where all there.
If he keeps on coming over I will keep going, as he is great example of how rap can be a vibrant and relevant live experience.
No hype man needed if you have the talent to move the crowd.
This was rap music at its finest in venue which tests every performer skills

Masta Ace came with artists who he is working with more current material with. Although it wasn't long before he dipped into his bulging bag of back catalogue to tease the crowd. As I had seen him at London Docklands in 1990 performing with Public Enemy, EPMD, Tragedy & Young Black Teenagers, I had seen an energetic performance then and had high hopes. From the moment he hit the stage he was obviously well polished and focused on giving a solid performance. It was moments before that Marco Polo had given a warm intro to Wordsworth, who had hyped the crowd up nicely. The Jazz Cafe was the perfect venue as this 4man group commanded the crowd to sway in an intimate setting like bottles on the backseat of a jeep going over speed bumps!. Masta Ace gave banter and background to all onstage-Wordsworth, Stricklin & Marco Polo, making a comfortable rapport with the engaged crowd. This was an entertaining evening as Ace lept from Album to project with ease keeping all waiting baited breath for each track. The sound was perfect and all vocals could be heard as on other systems would be drowned out or distorted-seeing Masta Ace at the Jazz Cafe was something on my 'TopTenList' 'IGotTa' see the 'MusicMan' live!. Go and support! ...(", )
