The Soul Cellar, Southampton promised so much. We'd never been there before but it's a really intimate, tiny place. I thought we'd be in for a real treat as the stage was literally in the room.
When the band came on it was tremendous, at their usual best but the acoustic was very poor, loud and a bit 'shouty'. Also, many of the crowd were obviously not Heavies fans and decided it was fine to stand around chatting, texting, and continually walking in and out to go for a smoke, drink, pee etc. Therefore it was almost impossible to really get into the groove...as it were...without some slack-jaw wanting to press past...again.
Fearing that I'd flatten the next migrating idiot, I gave up (deserted Mrs MiserableGit) and headed to the rear of the room (where the bar is) and watched from there, uninterrupted, drowning my sorrows and marveling in the appalling acoustics.
I've been following the Heavies since the early 90's and seen them live before. The London IndigO2 gig last October, which spawned the Live CD release, was simply brilliant - the crowd was the friendliest and most enthusiastic I'd ever had the pleasure of being in. This gig didn't attract the same atmosphere and I suspect that a lot of the audience were there out of curiosity rather than for the music. Shame.
This gig certainly won't put me off one of my favourite bands, but gigs in the city of Southampton that I've been to always seem a bit naff and disappointing - due mainly to the venues and a generally indifferent and apathetic audience. We're off to see Athlete at the Uni next and I hope this changes my mind.
Gets a 2 star rating out of loyalty to the band. Otherwise poor.
