Nestled in the heart of Birmingham stands the O2 Academy, where on a rainy Friday night Mike Skinner and Co took to the stage to bid farewell
to their home crowd. Earlier this year Skinner announced his retirement by saying, 'I haven’t really got anything more to do”, placing a 'closed'
sign on his bands' website, and announcing that the Computer and Blues tour was due to be their final one. With this news in mind fans flocked to
the O2 to bid farewell to their Birmingham born hero. It was set to be a big night! And big it was!
As heavy rain fell outside, three thousand plus Streets fans created a scene that could have been lifted from one of Skinner's music videos. Security
looked uneasy and twitchy as they faced a generation of individuals stiffled by their country's recession and wanting nothing more than to just
forget everything and have a good Friday night, no holds barred. The warning sign 'Crowd surfing and throwing objects will get you thrown out' was
ignored as Skinner took to the stage and the music base shook the very foundations of the corporate sponsored venue.
Skinner had the crowd in the middle of his sweaty palm for the whole show. As old Streets classics pumped out mosh pits formed, eyes fell closed,
jaws fell open and a young stage invader gained his 15 seconds of fame. Crowd surfers flew over heads and fights happened as Skinner reminded
fans to love one another and challenged anyone who had a problem with that to fight him. Fans were reminded of old classics, such as 'Dry Your
Eyes' and 'Fit But You Know It', the songs of a generation that had encouraged hangovers and helped their broken hearts heal.
In 'Weak Become Heroes' Skinner name-checked his music inspirations, and fans offered thanks to Skinner by singing his songs back to him
at a volume that could make eyes run. The show was closed with Skinner telling the crowd that he felt emotional and in the blink of an eye he was gone.
Never to return? Who knows. He may never be back, but quite frankly there may be no need for him to return. He has left behind the music of a
generation and massacred everyone with his rhymes and lyrics. Job done.
