A great, great show. Really personal feeling. Started off with loads of obscure b-sides that half the audience didn't even know, then burst into full blown Doolittle. A great set. Only drawbacks which lead to a star being deducted were, the lighting was at times a bit low and intense. Me and my other tall friend felt blinded in the beginning with an intense, smokeless spotlight aiming over the crowd. And speaking of the crowd, they were a bit half and half. Some were enjoying the show, but a lot of others were a bit aggressive, and the side to side pushing got a bit much up the front. But this is more the fault of the city in question, rather than the band. Still, as a show overall, a great time had. Fantastic sound, entertaining VFX and a set we all loved.

The Pixies are simply the greatest band of all time. I do not say that lightly. Say what you want about them 'selling out', reforming when they don’t even like each other purely for the money - when the first chord of the first song crunches from the speakers that all becomes irrelevant and we are nothing but thankful they are doing it again for those of us too young to have experienced it the first time.
Opening with B-sides ‘Dancing The Manta Ray’, ‘Weird At My School’ and ‘Bailey’s Walk’ was a real treat for the hardcore fans (do they have any other kind?).
They then treated us to seminal album Doolittle from start to finish in honour of its 20th anniversary, highlights being the wonderful ‘Here Comes Your Man’ and haunting ‘Silver’ – a track we’d have been unlikely to hear had the album not been played in full. After departing the stage they returned with a magical rendition of ‘Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf)’ and ‘Into the White’ in a shroud of white smoke providing quite a spectacle. We had had our moneys worth by now, but the band emerged for a second encore, with Kim Deal recalling that the last time the band played in Glasgow the gig was cut short after the barriers collapsed, and told us to ‘tell your parents we played this set for you’, as if in making amends for that unfortunate incident. What followed was a wholly unexpected ‘best of’ setlist including ‘The Holiday Song’, ‘Nimrods Son’, ‘Caribou’ and a fantastically raucous ‘Vamous’.
Kim Deal and Black Francis then started conversing for what became an increasingly uncomfortable length of time, were they arguing? Underlying tensions breaking through? No, all was well when Kim announced, “we’re tossing a coin, heads is Where Is My Mind”…before holding her arms aloft, she’d got her way, much to our delight to see the gig close with an awe-inspiring rendition of their ‘big song’.
In truth each song is as ‘big’ as the last, in every possible sense of the word. They’re the greatest band of all time, we’re honoured and lucky to have this second chance to see them do what they do better than anyone else, I will never forget that gig.

missed the first few songs of Doolittle but the last two-thirds was incredible. brilliant to finally see a band I've been interested in for ages, and brilliant to hear them play 20-year-old songs so well. the band were tight, loud, hit everything perfectly and the crowd were pretty cool too. Kim isn't hot any more and Frank now looks more like Georgie Dawes than anybody I've ever seen but the atmosphere and music definitely made it worthwhile going to see the Pixies.

What a pleasure Pixies were. Not only did they delight us with several B-sides, a couple of tracks from Surfer Rosa and the entire Doolittle album- the visuals really made the show for me. Old french film montages and western images dominated the screen. Only thing that let the performance down was the house lights continuing to be on during the encore. Very strange. And of course, as always with the SECC, the size of the venue destroys all intimacy. And when your the height I am- the view is always restricted!
Fantastic band, great show- sound better live than on CD. Not a lot of bands can claim that. Only wish they'd played cactus.

it is easy to go overboard on reunions, with nostalgia getting the upper-hand, but these shows weren't solely about the past, as they were from a band that are as relevant as any act today. they didn't look like some subculture legends that have been apart far longer than they have been together, and as they performed songs that have aged as well as they have themselves, i, like many others, forgot about the twenty years that separated doolittle's release with these four concerts. simply some of the best gigs i've ever attended.

We are all thankful to Pixies for the great music they produced in the 90s and the influece they still have on countless bands.
The group delivered the goods as expected from musicians with their standing and experience. Unfortunately the Briston Academy is not the best venue in town for acoustics and the sound really suffered for that, expecially from the balcony.
The songs have been loyal to their album version which is perfectly understandable. The only surprises have come from the big screen in the back, but - unfortunately - it all seemed more like a "planned at the desk" self celebration of the band than a birthday party filled with fresh spontaneity...

If you are into The Pixies, this gig would not have disappointed.
Dolittle will accompany me in my box when the time comes just in case there is a ghettoblaster on the other side. They played Dolittle in its entirety and that is the reason I went.
The set was basic but the sound and performance of The PIxies is why we were there. They don't need fancy gimmicks to put on a great show however, I have seen them better live but that was a few years ago.
Well worth the ticket price and I'd go again tonight if I could get tickets.

Having not seen the Pixies in the last 19 years or so ,i was a little nervous about how the gig would be...is it really a good idea to revisit a band, that were so great when i was a young indie kid going to see a band most weeks?
Some might say opening with 4 B sides was a mistake , well for me it was ok ,because it gave me time to squeeze my short little self into a great spot, with a fantastic view.
Quite amazing really ,as Brixton was the most packed i've ever seen it.
The gig really began when the opening bars of Debaser hit the crowd, from then on it was just one great song after another, all the good stuff from Doolittle-Wave,Monkey,here comes your man, plus my favourite, the ethereal ,where is my mind. A real bonus as i was only expecting them to play Doolittle to celebrate 20 years since its release.(yes,i was there the first time ,and have the LP,as were many others at the gig judging by all the bald heads)It all just went far too quickly. After a long wait at the end we were rewarded with Gigantic ,i think pretty much everyone had their arms in the air for that one.
I really can't believe just how good it was, can't wait to go again ,just hope they come back soon

A cold Thursday night in Brixton was warmed up by a great performance by the Pixies at the Academy. Celebrating the 20th anniversary of their classic album Doolittle, the Pixies did exactly what it said on the tin and played every song from the album, live and in sequence. Bracketing these songs were the associated b-sides, and an encore of three of their other popular songs (Caribou, Nimrod's Son, Gigantic).
Alongside great renditions of the album tracks was a constant video backdrop with different scenes/skits for each track. Personal fave was the chattering puppet eerily racing about during Mr Grieves.
First encore of Wave of Mutilation (Surf) and Into the White was aided by copious amounts of dry ice, which either carefully planned or by accident, left only Kim Deal visible throughout the song.
The second encore met rapturous applause as big final sing along to Gigantic ended a great night.

The Pixies were everything I thought they would be and more. Each tune was well delivered with the utmost passion and electricity, sending the eager fans into a frenzy as they danced, pumped their fists and screamed the band's thought-provoking lyrics. The stage show was brilliantly orchestrated with an almost prohibition feel with a shutter-like backdrop screen, projected video clips of everything from the sweaty audience to a cowboy montage and white, paper orb laterns hanging down from the ceiling. After playing B-sides and the Doolittle album, they pleased fans with a double encore, one of which filled the room with white fog for "Into the White". Although the venue was massive, it felt like a private little gig, with the Pixies, so chuffed, grinning away to the happy fans like it was their first time on stage. Priceless.

The sense of anticipation could be cut with a knife, the audience was humming with excitement, the Pixies teased the crowd with a seemingly endless montage of weird imagery, before POW! They arrived on stage grinning as the crowd went ballistic. This is what one imagines the perfect gig to be like. The entire auditorium screaming as the band blasted through the seminal album - Doolittle with a few other favourites and b-sides thrown in for good measure. We didn't want it to end, but after two encores we trudged out, hot, sweaty but exhilerated by the knowledge that we had all just taken part in something special.
