The raucous and somewhat demented soundclash style from support act Duchess Says, in hindsight, set the pace for what was to be a punked up explosion of a night in Brum. Annie-Claude, the female vocalist, as well as shrieking and screaming like an electrified harpy, plunged herself into the crowd, causing a headache for the guy on stage whose job it was to prevent any mic lead strangulation incidents! Our wide-eyed goth-neurotic girl then proceeded to immerse the crowd into her strange world, journeying through the slightly bemused and anxious swell. I think a sigh of relief could be heard underneath the applause, when the pouring of beer over her own head signified the finish, not least for the stage guy who had remained focused in avoiding any emergencies. Then it was the turn of the headliners, who appeared on stage with "Shake It" watched over in the background, by a vast eyeball. Karen O's vocals could be heard, but she remained side of stage until she eventually appeared to a flurry of rapturous applause from her welcoming fans. The first part of the set saw the punked-fuelled CBGB influenced tracks from their formative years, (Fever to Tell and Show your Bones) entice the crowd, with dashes of their new electro driven sound interspersing the seismic riffs. A vast number of the crowd were young student types who were pogoing like mad to "Black Tongue" and "Cheated Hearts". It was on the newer tracks from It's Blitz, such as "Dull Life", "Heads will Roll" and "Zero", that the pogoing became an all embracing factor. Unlike the previous band's efforts, Karen O held the stage with a Chrissie Hynde air of authority, her cloaked form adding a sense of Brooklynite mysticism, mesmerising the crowd. Even on the more down tempo tracks, such as "Skeletons" and "Hysteric", the trio managed to hold the crowd firmly in their grasp. Old favourites Gold Lion and Maps, made timely appearances, the latter being part of their encore. By the time Nick Zinner's guitar came scything down on the last track of the night "Date with the Night", the crowd were a fuelled hands in the air, head-shaking mass. Blitzed!
