Wonderfully romantic opera in a new translation by Martin Pickard has no longueurs: Edward Gardner's conducting bring fresh sparkles from stat to finish and the two leads debuting in the ENO can act as well as sing deliciously on e settled into their roles. Toby Spence as Lensky is a perfect fit both for voice and looks and Diana Montague as Mme Larina gives a fresh take on what can often be an underplayed character. Catherine Wyn Rogers does not disappoint at Fileppevna and for once one wished that Olga's role was bigger. Delightful and many congratulations to all, particularly the editor of the programme which, expensive at £5 was worth every penny.
