Some of the best choral and solo singing and acting I have ever seen at the ENO over the past 15 years. Line up of principals was impressive - particularly the tenor, Hoffman who was a sheer delight vocally. Balance between orchestra and singers was perfect. Set was very clever and I particularly liked the use of the corridor, stretching back stage right.. My only negative comment is that the opera is too long and the Director would have gained a few friends in the audience by taking a blue pen to some (much!) of Act ll. Gorilla in Act lll was only mildly amusing; and whilst cleverly portrayed and did not interfere with the continuity of the plot, I have yet to understand the rationale for including it. Overall a very good evening's entertainment, where the high standards justified the ticket price.
