Flaming lips 2009 Manchester Academy - I saw the flaming lips in sheffield in 2005(?) and at the Apollo in manchester and I'd been to the Academy before to see LCD sound system.
Firstly the venue - it's great! Free parking about a mile away from the Uni and no queuing to get in. Lager was £2.75, so reasonable enough but someone did get short changed at the bar so beware.
The Lips - Still a spectacle that must be seen! It was the first time I had seen them sober and must admit the experience is better when drunk, you need to let yourself go - sing along, clap your hands and boo at the mention of George W Bush!
It's the same format as 2007 but it's good so why change it.

The Lips were on top form last night. They played all my favorites and also some stuff from the new album which was great live! Crowd was a bit quiet but it was Monday night which is always tough! The set was enhanced by the view of Wayne's face v close up on the screen from the mike-cam which I thought was a great idea : )

I go to gigs, concerts & festivals quite frequently and I've gotta say after Monday night Flaming Lips have stolen my number one spot for all time favourite performances! The atmosphere was electric, the audience participation was heart-felt and hillarious (apologies to the people on the balcony!) and the band themselves?, quite simply Amazing!! From the minute Wayne opened the show by surfing the crowd in a giant inflatable sphere, to the electrifiying encore of 'Do you Realize?' the band were energetic and enthusiastic with spot on vocals. The set list was perfect, all my favourite songs were played i.e 'She Don't Use Jelly', 'Flight Test', 'Pompeii Am Götterdämmerung' and of course 'Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots'. Wow stilling buzzing from it now!! Brilliant!!!!!!

This was an amazing gig. My partner and I had both suffered colds and contemplated selling our tickets outside. Thank goodness the touts were too tight to give us a decent price!
The show was like an out of body experience. The music was perfectly complemented by a stunning visual show. This was enhanced by the sense of fun and joy brought by giant baloons and singer Wayne Coyne crowd suffing in a giant space ball.

Absolutely amazing. Even if you only have a passing interest in the Flaming Lips then beg, borrow, steal or if you live in Birmingham buy a ticket to one of their gigs. They will simply blow you away. Wayne & Co are the ultimate showman and turn every gig into a party.
Quite why it hasn’t sold out in Birmingham is beyond me.

Excellent venue and a wonderful concert. Good set although dominated by Embryonic. Great live act who really seem to enjoy the live experience as much as the audience.

Well this event was on Friday the 13th of november so some may say it was heading for disaster!!!! All was going well, the first band began singing, into their second song the fire alarms started going off...... next comes a rapid retreat for all gig goers outside of the Guildhall. After a while we were allowed back in. The first band had to be cut short, which was a shame. Flaming Lips came on, and soon any disappointment about the support was forgotten with Wayne doing his, "ball walking", over the audience. Things got better and better as the gig went on. fantastic music and sensory excitement, flashing lights, confetti, ballons and visual effects that only the Flaming Lips seem to make so exciting..... Unfortunately as the gig was coming to a crescendo of sensory feelings .... Friday the thirteenth struck again as two people started having epileptic fits in the audience. Everything had to stop, but full marks to the band for treating the incident with decorum and keeping everyone informed about what was goin g on. Eventually Flaming Lips did come back on stage and tried their hardest to lift the crowds up. They succeeded to a certain extent though it was never going to be possible to recapture the lost moment. I would alway encourage people to go to see flaming Lips but maybe warn them to think about their personal sesitivity to lights..... To end, Flaming Lips are fantastic, they do not come here often enough, I will always go to see them when possible.

Having seen the Flaming Lips twice before we knew what to expect however the euphoria created by the balloons, confetti and Wayne's entrance still gives you goosebumps. The smaller venue added to the atmosphere as everyone was involved in the show (even those sat upstairs in the balcony!)

As usual, the Flaming Lips never disappoint. They make every show feel as if it's the only show they'll ever play and it doesn't feel disingenuous. Highly recommended.

I went to the gig with low expectations as I am disappointed with the new album.
However from the outset the whole gig was amazing. It's so important to be standing and experience the hamster ball, balloons and ticker tape explosions that make the gig make one feel like a child again. A euphoric experience!
