It's only in watching "The Importance of Being Earnest" that you realise what a virtuoso of the one liner Oscar Wilde was. Rapid fire epigrams from start to finish. The Rough Magic cast are superb, very subtle. The red haired butler on roller skates is fantastic. The sets are exquisite, and the movement involved in changing the scene is perfect in it's precision.
There are two drawbacks to this production - the first is the very scant participation of Stockard Channing as Lady Bracknell and the second is the gaudy appearance of some of the costumes. Lady Bracknell and her daughter are over the top in terms of attire and in the final act Lady Bracknell's pillar box red satin ensemble is distracting in it's likeness to a cheap, flamable lampshade.
I would recommend the production but advise that it may be disappointing for fans of Stockard Channing because, in the opinion of this reviewer, she appears to have been under utilised given her talent.
