I had been counting down the days since May began, but on Sunday May 22nd, it was finally time to go see Rush! Our holy pilgrimage began on Sunday morning with a hearty breakfast, and then we made our way down to Birmingham. We were spending the night at the Crown Plaza hotel just outside the LG arena (formerly the NEC), and once I arrived there with my parents, my sister and my friend, we went straight up to the room to relax. I stayed in this exact same hotel the last time I saw Rush in Birmingham, and judging by the amount of fun I had last time, I couldn't wait to experience it all again! Seeing the Time Machine Tour a year earlier in Las Vegas meant that although I had seen the same show performed before, I knew that this one was going to be just as spectacular!
With a few hours to go before the show, we got something to eat down at the bar, and met up with other members of the family who were coming to the show; my Uncle and Auntie, my other Uncle and his son. It's a real family affair! We all booked tickets together in the same row, up in the stands to the left of the stage (on Geddy's side), so we could all get a good view (especially for the height-impaired members of the party!). With an hour to go, we made our way over to the arena, which is just a short walk from the hotel. First port of call for me was the merchandise stand, and I bought myself a tour T-shirt (it's the law!). My group and I soon made our way to our seats, and although they were a little 'higher up' than I wanted, we all still a great view of all goings-on on the stage. After waiting for what felt like an age, the lights went down, the hilarious time machine opening movie played, and the band was straight into 'The Spirit of Radio'. Instantly, everyone in the stadium was on their feet and clapping with Geddy! Seeing the thousands of hands clapping from my position was incredible, and it just goes to show how much Rush is loved here! They nailed 'The Spirit of Radio', and things were just going to get even better from now on...
The first half of the show consisted of so many great tunes that I was standing, clapping, singing and air-drumming the whole time! The highlights were 'Freewill', 'Subdivisions', 'Marathon', 'Time Stands Still' and 'Leave That Thing Alone'. Geddy's little bass solo at the end of that last song was incredible, and the fact that he can play bass that good whilst singing and playing keyboards is proof that he is one of the greatest musicians in the world! They also played two songs from their forthcoming album 'Clockwork Angels', and I thoroughly believe that this new album is going to be brilliant! At the end of the first half, there was barely time for me to catch my breath before the second movie began and the band kicked into 'Moving Pictures'! 'Tom Sawyer' was mind-blowing, 'Red Barchetta' was beautiful, 'YYZ' was epic (they really nailed that one), 'Limelight' was joyous (I laughed when my sister jumped out of her seat after the opening chords ran out) and 'The Camera Eye' was absolutely incredible! One of the best moments of the entire show was the whole arena singing along with 'Witch Hunt'; you could hear the voices of the audience rise over Geddy's! But of course, my own personal highlight was Neil's drum solo! He performed a spell-binding solo, starting with super fast patterns over waltz and latin ostinatos and his trademark double-handed crossovers. Then his beautiful drum kit spins around (always a thrill!) and he uses the electronic drums to play some African rhythms that hypnotise everyone in the arena. As usual he ends with triggering a big band chorus, and the crowd erupts when he plays his last hit! What can I say; his drumming is just incredible and awe-inspiring! I cheered so hard for Neil; he is my hero and he always will be!
The finale to the show was just awesome. They played 'Closer to the Heart', which is the essential Rush sing-along track, and I'm sure every single person in that arena was singing it. Next came '2112' and the whole arena started bouncing and rocking to the music. We all sang along and shouted "Hey!" in the gaps too! The set ended with the riff-heavy and firework-filled 'Farcry', and everyone cheered for more. They came back out with all guns blazing, starting with an unbelievable performance of 'La Villa Strangiato'. Alex's soloing in this song is both powerful and moving, and it was a joy to behold the masterful work of a guitar legend. The last song of the show was 'Working Man', which is where the band lets loose, and everyone goes nuts! Alex was soloing like crazy, Geddy's bass was thunderous, and Neil was pounding the crap out of his drums! When it was over, I was straight up on my feet (as was everyone else in the arena) and we cheered as loud as we could for these outstanding musicians. What an absolutely amazing show it was! As we were all walking back to the hotel, we all had the same thought: "Rush are awesome!"
