Have been to 2 other JM's gigs in the past. It is always very good. This time it as rather disappointing and boring.
He is becoming an icon of modern music, one of the best guitar players currently in business and top quality albums. At Apollo Hammersmith I watched JM rehearsing for a a old-fashion, New York style Jazz Bar.
Of course, there are a lot of people who very much enjoy this. However, you could see around the crowd on that evening that he and his band rather exagerated on improvisation. Lets put it this way: with that many hits JM carries on his shoulder, turning 3:30min songs into 14:00min did not do for me.
JM is no longer a "Pop musician for 13-years-old girls", we all know that. But that evening he crossed the line and only entertained a very specific public: old-fashion, New York style Jazz Bar people. I am sure they had a good time.
Was pleased to see that he was promoting the new album - which by the way is brilliant - but very disappointed to listened to very few songs and find myself spending most of my time talking to my friend. Again, this was typical of a Jazz Bar kind of appearence.
The JM and the band I saw at the Forum and Royal Albert Hall was far superior. If JM is now moving towards a Eric-Clapton type of musician I guess his audience will be way different. As a good guitar enthusiast, JM has become a modern icon with his unique tapping, complex chords and harmony. Listening to someone doing guitar solos - letting the other band members long solos - was never my thing. And while I enjoy (still does) the "technicalities" of his music, I was very bored with the exxageration. The worse is to think that many people were there only for his music.
Raising serious question on whether I should or not go to another of his gigs. I guess I rather keep the good memory, listen to the brilliant songs from the album and save the money.
PS: Well done to Apollo for the great sound quality. Much better than many other big venues in London.
Sorry,
Bruno
