Alabama 3 trouble me. I worry about them so much that as they rolled onto the stage of the Kentish Town Forum on the Tuesday 10th November I anxiously counted them all on. No Devlin but this was not a disaster. A girl in the crowd told me she was pregnant. Not only that but her repalcement, a sensual bundle of feline fun called Aurora Dawn, had somehow managed to forget her trousers. So far so good.
Alas there did seem to be a casualty. The majesterial presence of D Wayne Love would not thrill us this night. He won't dance to techno anymore. Too much partying? Not enough redemption? Who can say but, no wait... a couple of minutes into the first song the good reverand swanked coolly on. Not only was everyone still alive but they were all looking good. Well, good behind the shades anyway. I relaxed and let the evening wash over me.
And what an evening. I won't pretend to be a genuine devotee so I can't name the new tracks I heard. But I did hear new tracks and yea, verily, they rocked. The thing is when you have a back catalogue of the depth and originality of the 3 then you have to dig and dig deep. Hypo Full Of Love, Mansion On The Hill, Power In The Blood, Too Sick To Pray, Mao Tse Tung Said and Woke Up This Morning among others were all delivered with style and verve.
Disorganised chaos simmered on stage with various gentlemen of the cloth making occasional appearances to contribute to the fun. A couple of young blokes took a turn. One of them was described by Larry Love as 'Selling the Big Issue on the street in Camden when we found him'. How wonderfully typical.
The only thing that concerned me was that the place was nowhere near full. On the one hand this was fine as I got right down the front. But the Forum was the only London night on the tour. What's that all about?
The evening seemed to end with Larry LOve inviting everyone over the road to Monkey Chews pub for a party. Did I hear that right? Perhaps they're still there. Go gently boys, I need you all to stay healthy.
