We watched Finley at the Jazz Cafe in Camden on Friday 15th Jan. We were very impressed with the nice intimate feel of the venue and would definitely recommend future events there. Unfortunately we were a little underwhelmed with the performance itself. The warmup guy ('Jessie Dee' or something like that) was pretty good and got the crowd going well, but the main performance just felt flat.
There was nothing technically wrong with it, in that Finley hit all the right notes and his band did an admirable job; the problem was that Finley exhibited all the charisma of an autistic accountant! He didn't even acknowlege the audience for most of the gig, staring at the floor while singing or turning his back on the crowd. It felt like the whole thing was just some 'uncomfortable appointment' for him to get through, rather than something he enjoyed.
It never really felt like a live gig as he exhibited little emotion and did not even attempt to make a connection with the crowd. That might be understandable in a stadium, but if a performer can't create an atmosphere in a venue as small and intimate as the jazz cafe, then they have a serious problem.
