I was shocked and excited to see an email in my inbox entitled 'congratulations' only the day after I had pre-ordered the new album of the former Stone Rose, Ian Brown. So I printed out my free tickets and looked forward for the next week with wild expectation. You see I had never won tickets before or seen Ian Brown live; I was fairly familiar with his solo stuff from his greatest hists and awaiting his new album with mild anticipation.
Before we get too far into this review for those of you who love Ian Brown and his solo stuff and cant bear to read a bad word about the man, maybe you should skip this one.
Cos that is exactly as I see the man, a former Stone Rose, lucky enough to be in one of the most influential groups of our time, having worked with with one of the most awesome guitarists and song-writers (Squire) and an equally good or better producer (Leckie).
And dont get me wrong The Stone Roses and in particular the self-titled debut album that this year celebrates a remaster edition, twently years after its release in 1989; are both amazing feats.
But no one can rest on their laurels that long, and Ian Brown hasnt tried to.
Now on his sixth solo studio album Ian Brown has relased his gretest hits and looks to build on it. This new album 'My Way' hasnt recieved the best reviews to put it politely, and for the most part I can hear why. It sounds the same as his last one. And the one before that.... etc. etc.
Now that is out the way, back to the gig, and good news; he didint only play stuff from his new album! In fact he didnt really play much with the whole gig lasting only 40 minutes! And this time was with him playing the new single 'Stellify' twice! In fact he must have only performed ten songs at most and two of them were stellify, one was a horrible cover of 'All you need is love' by the Beatles and a welcome rendition of 'Fools Gold'. All this with a great performance of one of his better tracks 'F.E.A.R.' in the middle of it made for an enjoyable show. I am glad I had the privelage of seeing such a legend in such a venue, thank you HMV and thank you Polydor.
Im just not sure now Im gona go to Brixton Academy in December! Anyone want a ticket?
