Two people, two voices, two guitars, one small rug to stand on. These guys sent out a sound that hit the soul like the softest of sledghammers. Impossible to ignore, unstopable and so beautiful you wouldn't ever want it to stop! Harmonies to shame angels, musicianship to challenge any and songs that stay in your head for weeks after. I knew this was going to be GOOD I just wasn't prepared for how good. Dave Rawlings was my guitar hero, he is now a guitar GOD. I now have to cope with the withdrawal symptoms.

Never seen them live before although I've got several of the CDs. What was so surprising was that even in the elevated, nose-bleed section of the hall, the evening was incredibly intimate. I've seen other good acoustic acts but generally in much smaller settings - Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart come to mind - so I was astonished at how GW and DR were able to keep my attention on the pair of them in such a barn of a place for the entire evening. DR is a very unusual player but the interplay between the two guitars - her Gibson and his old Epiphone - is remarkable. Wonderful.

Gillian and David played two stunning sets. With only microphones to amplify their sound, their voices were crisp, moving, and as clear as any studio track.

If you're a long time Gillian Welch and David Rawlings fan, it is worth every penny to see them live. (Understatement!!)

The new album Harrow & the Harvest is a great addition to the duo's already powerful repertoire.

I loved pretty much everything about this gig, although it took a couple of songs to get going properly. At one point Gillian mentioned that the stage was very big, I thought for a short while that this might be a problem, but soon forgot about that as I was totally caught up in Gillian's voice and Dave's playing and wonderful harmonies. All in all a great night.

I was amazed when they decided on Hammersmith Apollo for the Gillian Welch concert. It’s a shabby, tacky and dirty place and ever so big for two acoustic musicians. Though I would have much preferred somewhere like the Barbican or the Southbank Centre, she did pull it off. I like the new album and the first set was largely taken from it. The big surprise though was how this was a mere taster for an outstanding second set which ended with superb encores of country classic Jackson and Jefferson Airplane’s White Rabbit . I’ve waited a long while to see her but it was well worth the wait – next time, somewhere else though. Please!

I went to the Gillian Welch gig on Monday and absolutely loved it. I've seen her before, approximately 8 years ago, so I've been a fan of hers and Dave Rawlings for many years. We got to the Apollo early to avoid any crushes in getting inside but the whole evening was really well organised. The doors opened on time and there were plenty of staff available, both at the bar and elsewhere. Gillian and Dave started right on time and played a very varied evening of old and new material. They were completely wonderful and made funny comments at their own expense. My husband remarked that he'd really enjoyed the gig when he wasn't previously a huge fan. We both left really happy and looking forward to the next time!

We have been going to live gigs for a long time. Our first major gig was Ella Fitzgerald and the Count Basie Orchestra in 1960. So we started at the top over 50 years ago. We would rate the Gillian Welch concert at the Apollo in our top 10, probably top 5 of all time. They were that good.
2 voices + 2 guitars - that's all, no more but somehow their sublime harmonies and uncanny musicianship & understanding lifted the performance to the very best. If they had played for as long as the audience demanded they would still be playing now. They got a great welcome and rapturous encore calls with standing ovation from everyone present.

Stunningly good gig with both Gillian and David in fine voice, David's guitar and banjo work is so much more than an 'accompaniment' to Gillian's singing, its artwork in its own right and justly earned spontaneous applause. Waited a long time to see them live and it was sooooo worth the wait. Gillian delightful in every sense. Two encores to standing ovation.
