The evening was set up beautifully - in the grounds of Arundle Castle, sun going down, Friday night beer flowing (though, inexplicably, there was only one beer tent to serve about 3000 people, meaning half-hour queues and tantrums galore), great sound.
Idlewild set tone for the night, drawing on the more 'radio friendly' songs from their extensive catalogue. This was not a night for boundary-pushing or overly rock 'n roll antics; this was a night of crowd-pleasers, breezy tunes and catering to an audience who may or may not have heard the 'singles'. While largely inoffensive (remember that Idlewild were touted as the 'next Nirvana' when they first came out 10 years ago), Idlewild's tunes were unanimously brilliant. Every song was laden with gorgeous harmonies, poignent lyrics and hooks galore. It was just a shame that most of the crowd didn't arrive until the next was nearly over.
The less said about the Lightning Seeds, the better. The absolute definition of Bland, Ian Brody & Co played plod-by-numbers indie-pop that made us remember exactly why their legacy has amounted to being used as background music in Morrisons.
Supergrass, on the other hand, were a far more interesting proposition. Would they go for the crowd-pleasers like Alright, Lenny and Going Out, or settle for the more testing and impenetrable 70's-tinged numbers from the last couple of albums? In the end there was a healthy mixture of both. The huge singalongs of Pumping on your Stereo, Sun Hits The Sky and Moving were superb, while the more playful gems from I Should Coco (particularly Stange Ones) caused the biggest stir with the Supergrass faithful. Admittedly, the momentum did dip when they explored some of the 'newies', and there were persistent sound troubles (which was odd, as the sound had been impeccable for the first two bands), but overall it was a fun, summery collection, ending with a riotous Caught by the Fuzz, by far the least 'safe' moment of the night and a genuine release.
But what happened with all the beer?! Friday nights just shouldn't be that sober.
