The last time I saw George Clinton onstage was in 1978, when he bought the whole P-Funk crew to the Hammersmith Odeon and funked the audience for 5 hours. The only surviving member from that classic line-up is lead guitarist Mike "Kidd Funkadelic" Hampton, who shines throughout the night with his killer solos. As always George led from the front with help from his more than capable vocal crew who bought their own flavours to the classic P-Funk jams.
The audience were also stars tonight, they really came to party and they let George & company know that with their non-stop chanting, dancing and "throwing the funk sign". A great night out was had by all, with over 140 minutes of P-Funk music. With so many songs to choose from Parliament/Funkadelic songbook, GC could even afford to leave out classics like "Cosmic Slop", One Nation Under A Groove" & "Cholly".
Nona Hendryx (ex-Labelle) joined the band near the end and sang "Lady Marmalade" and she's still in posession of some great vocal chops too.
I can't wait to see this band bringing the funk & roll again. Hurry up and come back to Blighty soon, we need you Uncle Jam.
The only bad point was that the sound could've been clearer throughout with more clarity on the rhythm guitars and background voices. Did they soundcheck?
To all the funkateers out there, you don't know what your missing. It's time to re-pledge allegiance to the P-Funk.
