We have been following Tommy Castro for 15 years or more. To our delight we walked in to Lou's Bar in San Franciso 12 or so years ago on a Sunday afternoon and instead of the anticipated pick-up band Tommy was playing.
Since then we have seen him on the Bluescruise where he and his band are regulars. They are great blues artists that can play it all from their own compositions to John Lee Hooker and some.
Last night the sound was appalling and despite his recent awards the audience was small although it built up during the evening and was very appreciative. The music would have been fantastic instead of just very good. I hope these excellent artists are better served tonight at The Boom Boom Club.
Why on why do these venues fail to produce the sound quality that both the punters and more importantly the bands deserve. Last year at The Albert Hall we couldn't hear Jackson Brown or his musicians & backing singers. At The Shepherds Bush Empire despite being at the front of the stage (and trying out standing at the back of the auditorium), we could not hear the vocalist, african drummer or the keyboard/flautist. Derek and his drummer were as ever fantastic but lacked the depth of the whole band & tremenous singing and the excellent musicianship of the fkeyboard & flautist. Yet twe could hear the whole band when caught in a dreadful gale on board a ship in the caribbean so why not in a relatively small venue?
As at the Albert Hall no-one was interested in improving the sound - or lack of it, People who had not been fortunate to see Derek & the band before didn't realise what they were missing. It is to their discredit that the sound engineers are seemingly too arrogant or deaf to improve their workmanship to the detriment of the the paying customers and more importantly the artists.
Last night's 'sound engineer' couldn't even have been forgiven for being too young to understand what we older bluezo's who were lucky enough to attend the blues and jazz clubs of the 60's - and whose age is immaterial to this argument- expect.to hear.
Never-the-less, notice to Promotors 'Get the great Tommy Castro' back to London as soon as possible,.
