The first of these four bands was by far the best. The Young States were tight, musical, engaging and pretty damn good. Their musicality was enhanced by a tight set and it it clear that these guys practice a bit!.
The other support acts were quite apart in quality; Little Yellow Ukeles (energetic but not really standing out in any way, though fair play to the drummer with the broken arm) and Pacific Theatre (interesting line up and a great sound for a three piece but a bit reliant on screeching - a shame because the last song in their set rivalled The Young Staes for the best song of the night).
The headline Call Me Ishmael were grotty. The guitarist broke a string after the first offering and could not get his borrowed replacement in tune (even with the help of electronics and his band mates) for about five minutes. The rest of the band plodded about the stage and disengaged from the audience before stumbling back onto some kind of set. We left after the next song fell into disarray. Maybe it got better after that, bit I doubt it.
The Young States would entice me back in a jiffy and I might go to see Pacific Theatre again, praticulary of they develped their lyrical reportoire.
