Jimmy Webb's sons have clearly inherited their dad's musical talents, and - to quote the Bible with which the family is familiar - added to them several talents more. On Monday night Jimmy played piano, and the Webb Brothers played keyboard (Christiaan), guitars (Justin, James), bass (Cornelius) and melodicas. The songs were home-grown too, whether old favourites of Jimmy's (Galveston, Wichita Lineman) or new ones by the Brothers (Bad Things Happen to Good People, Old Tin Can). "Making music as families used to pre-television," said Jimmy at the start - some family! The support band was gallant and pleasant, but could not compete.
And what an amazing venue. The Union Chapel is a working place of worship, but quite capable of putting on its secular glad-rags (lights, a bar) and becoming an atmospheric performance area with good sightlines and near-ideal acoustics for this kind of band. Modest amplification was all that was needed for piano, guitars, keyboard, pedal steel, bass, two girl backup singers, and the drums which were played by one Cal Campbell. Name familiar? He's the son of Glen Campbell, leading interpreter of Jimmy Webb's songs. All in the family, really.
