I've followed Larry via his recordings, both solo, and with the Crusaders, Steely Dan etc, for 30 years, but this was my first chance to see him live, and he did not disappoint. A genial, relaxed presence, he simply has an overwhelming command of his instrument, and fantastic musical feel.
Supported by his son Travis on bass (yes, he looks nothing at all like his Dad,) and Gene Coy on drums, the trio was superbly tight and musically aligned.
Larry played a mix of oldies, including a great 'Josie' from the Steely Dan 'Aja' album, and the classic 'Room 335' from his own solo album of 1978 as part of a well-deserved encore (yes, it sound very like Steely Dan's 'Peg', but still a great tune) and some newer funk and blues stuff. Jazz, blues, chords, solos, he nailed it all with perfect taste and technique, and little apparent effort.
The Jazz Cafe is also the perfect venue for this kind of thing. Small enough that everyone feels near the stage, big enough to create a buzz, and easy to get to the bar.
The best £25 I have spent in a long time. If you appreciate guitar playing at its very best, you should really try to catch Larry next time.
