Words cannot express how accomplished a musician Steve Winwood actually is,even from his early days with the Spencer Davis Group,he shone brightly.
The guy can still cut it,he not only plays keyboard,but guitar too,and his show is full of amazing musicianship,when he gets up from the keyboard,he picks up his guitar and plays like no other,he is sadly one of the most under-rated,yet,amazingly,one of the most influencial musicians around,catch his show,you are guaranteed a good night!

Well what a disappointment this gig was. A number of largely forgettable songs played in a bad lounge jazz way. Planted behind his Hammond for long periods the show refused to take off despite a largely enthusiastic audience. Then came the worst moment in my 40 years of gigs a 25 minute self indulgent song 'Light Up or Leave Me Alone' where we were subjected to in turn a Hammond solo, guitar solo, saxophone solo, bongo solo and finally a drum solo....yes that is right 5 minutes of bongo...90 second chorus...5 minutes of drums...I kid you not!!!! Even the crowd cheered the end of the bongo solo to try and bring the song to an end because unfortunately we knew what was coming!!! Yet when he picked up the guitar as on Dear Mr Fantasy the whole gig comes alive and I enjoy a song as much as anything I've ever witnessed. And no John Barleycorn Must Die......his finest moment on record!!!

I was looking forward to hearing a good range of his stuff with at least a few of my favourites from Arc of a Diver but managed only one song the whole show. Clearly still a very talented musician and band but long boring jamming sessions and solos were a real turn off. Not worth it.

The particular musical talents of the five individual performers were underscored by their ability to play really effectively together. It was all about the music-no time wasted on banter or jokes. More music for your money therefore. Despite the fantastic musicianship there was a kind of humility about the band. A terrific concert!

He is known for his old stuff which I think most people wanted to hear.
He was very good and his musicians were great too but I might as well have gone to see a band I didn't know because I didn't know any of the music except for about four songs. If you read this Steve, how can you leave out While You See a Chance Take It? You had your chance and left it out!!!

I always admired the progression of Steve Winwoods music from the Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith to his individualistic solo music. It’s for this reason I overcame my normal aversion to going to the concerts of hero’s of my youth.
Good call! Great night, Steve Winwood and the band displayed such energy, passion and pure technical virtuosity of truly great musicians. I enjoyed every moment.
OK, so some fellow ‘greys’ leaving the venue moaned that the extended ‘Light up’ jam session would have been better replaced with a medley of classics from his extensive back catalogue.
I think they missed the point, here was a ‘legend.’ at the top of his game with a superb band of musicians, to cap it all they played to just 1000 lucky souls at the an intimate and atmospheric O2 academy venue.
So thank you Steve: A night to remember.

I went to this concert fully expecting to see Steve Winwood at his best and was frankly disappointed. I've always thought he was a fantastic vocalist and brilliant guitarist and although his voice was as fantastic as I thought it would be he only played the guitar on 3 songs all night!!!
His support band were fantastic musicians but I went to see Steve Winwood not them and 1 song went on for over half an hour with a solo from each of them and brilliant though each of them are in their own right I paid to see him not someone playing saxophone or bongo's.
Considering what a fantastic back catalogue of music he has to call on I was also disappointed in the songs played as I only knew 5 of them all night.
All in all an average night spoilt by too much of the band and not the man himself.

How disappointing this concert was.
When he sang, the quality of the sound system was so poor that one could hardly hear his voice.
He made little effort to communicate with his audience.
He could have sung more of his all time greats, for example he did not play "Back in the High Life Again".
Far too many, repititive Hammond Organ solos.
Set, sound and lighting all very amateurish.

Steve's band was not your typical rock backline - it had a percussionist as well as a regular drummer and no bass player, but it worked, they were brilliant!
Steve's unique voice is still instantly recognisable as always and showed no sign of waning and his musicianship was superb, both on Hammond organ and guitar. I'm not familiar with his more recent material and it seemed much "funkier" than his earlier chart successes but it did show his versatility and amazing talent. It might have helped newcomers to his music if he had annouced each number. I think some members of the audience were expecting more Spencer Davis or Traffic numbers but there were a handful of those too and they got great receptions. I get the impression with Steve that it's all about the music and not fitting into any particular style. He does them all superbly.

Saw Steve Winwood in the 80s at The Royal Albert Hall and he was excellent. I know we are 30 years on, but we really expected more Steve Winwood and less self indulgent band jamming.

We have always wanted to see Steve and was excited he was playing near home too at the Colston Hall, Bristol.
His voice was amazing and all the band played exceptionally well.
If there was one let down for me he didn't do keep on running or Valerie but as he has written so much material we could have been there all night! A lot of new stuff some I liked, some not as much, but I think its always the same when you hear new material.
Overall nice venue, Great voice and brilliant musicians!

Always been a fan of Steve Winwood's soulful voice and talented organ/guitar playing since Spencer Davis days, then through Traffic and Blind Faith to his solo stuff. However I have to say this concert left me underwhelmed to say the least. First 2 songs lasted 25 minutes, Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys about 30 and featured 2 drum solos, organ, saxophone and guitar solo. Just too much padding!

It was frankly boring, and I know a lot of people around me felt the same. Apart from the woodwind chap everybody looked miserable on stage, ,and the drummer just didn't suit the swing feel of Steve's music at all.

Very disapointed with the performance, I was looking forward to seeing and hearing classic Steve Winwood, but instead each number was dragged out going from one keyboard solo, followed by a sax solo, followed by a keyboard solo, followed by a drum solo, followed by a sax solo followed by another keyboard solo etc...the icing on the cake was a number ( I didn't recognise) which managed to solo each of the 5 artists on stage and lasted 25 minutes ! by which time there were people leaving in numbers. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed some of it, but it was not the concert I expected, and I think that goes for the majority of the very quiet audience present, there simply was no atmosphere.

Steve W and the band were terrific! Such talented musicians, creating great sounds around Steve's special voice, and his Hammond playing and guitarwork! Unfortunately, the solos, brilliant though they were, became over-long and self-indulgent and it IS possible to have too much of a great thing! As Colston Hall is a seated venue, there was no easy way to take a break in a 2+ hour concert with no interval. I knew the Steve Winwood gig would be special, but it became less so during those long solos! The crowd cheered for more, but a noticable number of people left before the encore, so I guess others felt the same as me. It definitely was a 5-star gig, but it could have been more audience-friendly!!

Dazzling skills from all the group, but we went to hear Steve's old hits and he only performed three. The rest of the show was an exteremely accomplished demonstration of modern jazz. Not much audience engagement. It was like the band had gone to work.

A long two hours, these guys can play and got appreciation but didn't take the aging audience with them - never seen so many leave early during a show.
Played for their pleasure rather than ours with only a few of his better known songs featured.
