Im a mature UB40 fan andhave seen a number of their concerts, this was the first once since the lead singer left. Unfortunately the new lead singer is trying to fill some rather large boots.
To me it sounded like a karaoke attempt at the tracks he sang, dont get me wrong hes a good singer but the songs belong to Ali Campbelland it wasnt his voice coming over. (For me) it wasnt the same, so I felt a bit disappointed although the overall experience was still good and Im glad Iwent.
The singer also wasnt enunciating enough more like mumbling, and the strange behavioural thing of leaving the stage centre IMMEDIATELY the song was over, retreating into the shadowsat stage rear. He didnt once engage with the crowd and looked uncomfortable in the job.
Perhaps the lead guitarist Campbell should have taken over as the lead singer, as he has the voice we are used to hearing - or Astro who can teach the new bloke a thing or two about engaging the audience as well as using the voice more.
All songs were introduced by the other Campbell brother - it was like no one else was capable of doing this, surely this is a job (in part at least) for the lead singer ??
For me the band has suffered the loss of Ali Campbell badly and have made a mistake with this new lead, I understand the new bloke is also a Campbell, perhaps he came cheaper than any other option.
For me I would say make Astro the lead singer and the lead guitarist Campbell should share the front of stage mic more instead of hiding off to one side.
Slightly disappointed.
