My first Steely Dan show was (from other reviews) one of their best ever - lucky me! I loved all of it, the sound was superb, the playing wonderful, and a great choice of songs. The encore included Reelin' In The Years with the original guitarist Elliot Randall (who lives in London) and brought the house down. The Hammy Odeon is not air-conditioned (or it wasn't working) and it was HOT but the music was so good nobody seemed to mind. All the musicians were of course first rate; I thought Jon Herington on guitar was particularly good.

sometimes you can be a liitle too laid back! the highlight for me and my partner of this show was when Elliot Randall took to the stage and nailed Reelin in the Years to the boards. It's a pity that the band and audience were a litlle restrained for the rest of the show. All that aside you can't fault the sheer musicality of the whole band. My partner was really disappointed though....they did just not rock enough and are now too much a "cabaret". For me though.......excellent, yet again.

I've been a keen fan of Steely Dan since university 30-odd years ago, but this was the first time I had seen or heard them live.
Donald Fagen is every bit the person you expect him to be; acerbic, witty, but no hogger of the limelight, etc.. Walter Becker more laid back and the man to some extent lurking in the shadows. But put them together and, boy, what entainers and entertainment.
Dan - come back next year, please

The Dan rocked into Birmingham and It simply was their best UK concert to date. This was my 3rd Dan concert in the UK and it really did blow all the rest away. Starting with a very bluesy version of reelin in the years through to the fabulous FM some 2 hours later they really did give their hard core fans a night to remember

Once again, Steely Dan produced a performance of quality, style and variety from their extensive back catalogue. Particular surprises were 'Green Earings', 'Parker's Band' and 'Peg'. Great to see more quality stuff from Walter Becker on guitar, but he was rather eclipsed by Jon Herington (also on guitar), who played a blinder all night. But, let's be honest, the whole outfit performed brilliantly!

With Fagen and Becker joined by 11 others on stage, as I took my seat I knew that something special was in store.
A four piece horn section made up of Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, & Baritone Saxophone. With Lead and Bass guitairs, Drums, Keyboards, and three great singers on the backing vocals. The power of this line up was then capped with the addition of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker themselves.
No tapes, no computers, no bum notes or forgotten lyrics with Fagen and Becker delivering on their reputation for perfection Just great musicians doing what thay do best, and delighting an audience whose ages surprisingly spanned 3 decades.

I went to see Steely Dan with my Dad. After growing up listening to them I never thought I'd get the opportunity to see them live. My Dad and brother went last year without me, the swines, so I was really exicted to see they were touring again.
And I wasn't disappointed! Although they didn't play all the obvious songs, what they did do they did brilliantly. Shame Michael McDonald couldn't have been there to add his special vocals but the backing singers were fantastic and would've wiped the floor with anyone in the x-factor queue down the road!
The crowd was a strange mix of ages, I take the point about the crowd being subdued but we had a perpetual bar/toilet goer in front of us (who was also sitting in the middle of the row), someone doing a hand jive in her seat and a man furiously taking notes - but all were enjoying themselves in their own way!
Anyway I'd recommend going, they were well worth the 3 hour car journey through a thunderstorm to get there, and I'd go again tomorrow if I could. I'm just sad I wasn't a sweet thing from Boston back in the day ;o)

... Folks were in a line around the block ... but not us. We only had FRONT ROW & CENTRE seats for a Steely Dan Concert!!!
It was like our own personal concert ... twas unbelievable.
These chaps have been our unlikely heroes for nigh on 25 years, so it was always going to be an experience, but you don't realise just how phenominal it's going to be until you actually are in the front row at your all time favourite band's gig.
Only slight down side with being so far forward was the balance being slightly out wrt a couple of Herringbone's solos, but hey ... can't have it all.

The tickets for Steely Dan were purchased as a "milestone" birthday gift. The whole show bought back many happy memories and was certainly a very suitable gift.
The only downside to the evening was the lack of air conditioning in the theatre on one of the hottest days of the year!

Hearing Steely Dan live for the first time they did not disappoint. Whilst Donald Fagen (smart jacket and sneakers) was the obvious main man putting out vocals as fresh as ever, the laid back (and ultra casually dressed) Walter Becker hit his solos with precision and depth. Whilst he seems happy to give the major part of the limelight to his partner there is no doubt that his contribution is massive.
Overall the band were excellent (with perhaps some over-enthusiastic drum work), and the only drawback from up in the gods was some imbalance in the sound system.

Favourite moment: Backing singers ‘You gotta shake it baby…’ and Elliot Randall encore. @
Setlist: Elliot Randall's appearance in the encore was really cool, the drummer was funky, I couldnt actually hear the bass so he was a bit of an enigma to me. The guitarist is always blinding at times and then disappointing at others - those players on the records are such a hard act to follow. It was great to hear Elliot just play the original part without 'interpretation'. I'd love to just hear Denny Dias and Larry Carlton play live with them. @
Opening act(s): Loungey, faux 'jazz' from Holland @

My favourite band were not as good as usual:
1. The sound was mixed pretty quiet. I dont know if that's where I was sat or not but it was never this quiet at their shows before. I saw the Birmingham and Hammersmith shows and it was same both times. At times we strained to hear the music above the background of general polite conversation. To get lost in your favourite tunes you need to hear them nice and loud. We are not talking deafening here, just loud enough to fill a large venue.
2. Donald struggled alot with the high notes and although the crowd were willing him on (myself included), he couldnt quite regain the magic.
3. Walter's gtr noodling was too relaxed. Where's the passion Walt?

Waited a long time to catch SD in concert after missing the opportunity several years ago and I'm afraid I was a little disappointed. I knowthere's always a need to promote new material/albums but they should also want to please those who remember their good old days. Where was Hatian Divorce, Rikki Don't Lose That Number and FM (NSAA) of all songs? (which, in my opinion, are three of their best and most popular!) There just wasn't enough old material to keep me interested and coupled with the guy behind who constantly kicked my seat and shouted at the top of his voice throughout the concert, I was quite happy when it was over! The price of the merchandise was also disconcerting! On a positive note, Donald Fagen still has 'the voice', the band were also on form and the backing singers were excellent - the best I've seen in a long while.

The band were, as usual, flawless and ultra-professional. Played mostly tunes we all new and loved - but the venue was just so bloody hot, it was hard to focus on the music from up in the circle, 3 rows from the back with only a couple of foot of headroom. I would go and see them again, but if they are going to perform during the summer months, please find a venue where we can breathe and concentrate on the excellent vibes!
The final number, Reeling in the Years, with their original guitarist, was brilliant!

No-one expects Dan to play a 'greatest hits' session but a couple of them would have been appreciated. As a result the audience, whilst appreciating the musicianship, were lukewarm during most of the time and yet yearned to be more enthusiastic.
Are Dan now ashamed (or bored) of playing 'Do it Again', 'Rikki Don't Lose that Number' Haitian Divorce' ? and why make such a hash of 'Reeling in the Years' by slowing the tempo down to snail's pace?
They play so rarely these days that it was a disapointing performance given the high expectations.

This was a first after having been a fan for at least 30 years. It was brilliant seeing musicians and singers of this high calibre performing their material. The two main men may be 30 years older now from when I first started listening to them but are in the same league as the likes of the Eagles and Peter Gabriel. They may not command Global Audiences but they can still deliver the goods.

Excellent. These guys played over two hours straight off note perfect gig ,all the musicians there might have been older gents but there was no lack of tempo. I thoroughly enjoyed it, despite the oppressive heat that evening, and hats off to the band for putting up with the sweaty joint.
Sadly the venue, left much to be desired. As Don Fagen remarked, they had played some toilets on their tour, and the Apollo sadly was. with an outside temperature of about 28 degrees C.
For a damned hot night the bar staff were bordering on indifferent , and a hot dog at £4 quid is an outright rip off, ( don't care if it is London) and the toilets were woefully inadequate and frankly disgusting.
