Expecting so much ......but let down. No hits or popular tunes- just new tunes most with Spanish babble ! Heard his other gigs have included old tunes so not sure what changed this evening? Where were the "special guests" - did I miss something ? Goodish venue but poor performance ! Maybe a one-off poor night but won't be seeing me/us again for sure.

This was my third time at a Jonathan Richman gig. The man is incredibly talented, but this was a huge disappointment. He played for only 65 minutes, part of which was taken up with him dancing and playing minor percussion, and some of the songs were so drawn out that there were very few of them. He says he doesn't do nostalgia, and refuses to play any of the songs we want to hear, and yet he usually plays Egyptian Reggae - an instrumental. He's good, but he's not that good. I wouldn't go again. I wish you all better luck at the Union Chapel and Bush Hall.

So, he didn't perform any of his old numbers (apart from a short blast of Egyptian Reggae) but his personality, stage presence and overall audience interaction skills compensated magnificantly. It was like stand-up to music! I laughed and almost cried!

He still holds a fascination with Spanish guitar and languages and especially cultures. He even spoke some phrases in Welsh which was gratefully accepted by the crowd.

His natural ease with an audience endeared him to them immediately. He moved the drums and microphone to get closer to the audience and kept going away from the microphone to be near the front rows (a sound man's nightmare!). A good move and a charismatic enigma of a man, that I would walk over broken glass to see again!

Jonathon's a little eccentric and he can't be imitated but you'd really need to be a fan. He was on form but I could have done with a bit more. An hour and ten left my JR appetite a little unsatisfied. the venue was the kind of place you shoulkd see him if you are going to give it a whirl small and intimate.

I love gigs that are a rare glimpse of one of life's true geniuses. The set was a mixture of quiet unspoilt beauty and jovial frolicking. The sell-out audience behaved perfectly which was essential for this event's chemistry to work. They (we) fell completely silent when our entertainer for the night took us to the numerous delicate and fragile musical stop-off points before moving us en mass to a land where we could giggle like children.

A unique voice, unique songs, unique personality, unique history, a true individual. Ask not who influenced Jonathan. Ask who hasn't been influenced by him.

Important footnote - what a great venue.

A hot, sweaty venue, problems with the mic at the start, but an appreciative crowd and a man on top form with his singing (english, french and spanish), his banter and his dancing. Tommy on the drums should not be underestimated. A good, fun night.

This was a real surprise. No band, just Jonathan, a drummer and a Spanish guitar. Played a few of the standards, but not all. He built a rapport with the crowd really quickly and the set romped through to an end. No encore and I like that. All those fake "oh gosh, really? Us? You want more?" is so fake. Instead Jonathan finished, donned his jacket, put his guitar in its case, nudged the drummer and the pair of them left by the fire exit. Magic!

He played to a huge (400?) crowd and must have sung around 30 songs in a 11/2 hr set, acoustic guitar and drummer. A great evening and a very funny show, although not many of my personal favourites were included which was just a little disappointing.

as a longtime jonathan richman fan-since the early 70s- and having seen him in concert several times, it is with great regret i pen this review. it is not that he was bad--far from it --it was just he did not seem the same. gone was most of the improvisation and sheer lunacy of the past, to be replaced by a performer who embarked on long spanish guitar solos and a penchant for wistful renditions of "girlfriend", "the old world",and"springtime in new york". being jonathan, he did throw in the odd gem, such as his song about keith richards,plus "mr. sorrow", but on the whole you felt something was missing. i even heard someone being chastisedfor speaking too loud as this was a quiet concert"--must be a first for a rock show! he did finish on a high with " my baby loves me" which produced the best reaction of the night, but perhaps significantly there were no calls for an encore. maybe i am being a little harsh, but then again, it could be jonathan and his audience taking him too seriously.
