The show started with a DJ playing a set list of classic tracks from the New Jack Swing era of R&B. Jade's "Don't Walk Away", R Kelly & Public Announcements "She's Got That Vibe" and others went down a treat. A few Michael Jackson tracks were played including "Bad", one member of the audience really went for it with all the dance moves! Bell Biv DeVoe's "Poison" was also another massive crowd pleaser!
The main show started with Vince DiCola's classic "Training Montage" played by the four piece band - guitar, drums, bass and keyboards. Off stage Bobby, Johnny and Ralph introduced each other to massive applause. The "Heads of Stage" kicked off the show with Bobby's classic "On Our Own" from the Ghostbusters II soundtrack, a film in which he had a cameo appearance as a doorman.
Following this was a medley of other solo hits including "Stone Cold Gentleman".
The guys played a few of their famous New Edition ballads, saying "Home Again" was about how much they appreciate their fans taking the time to come and see the show.
The show worked brilliantly because BB, JG and RT are such good friends and know each other's songs inside out. Each took a turn for solo performances and their fellow Heads Of State acted as backing vocalists. They all still have the dance moves even now they are in their 40s! Ralph had to help Bobby up after some of his more provactive and low to ground dance moves (you can use your imagination on that one!).
A nice tribute was paid to Michael Jackson with an impromptu performance of "Rock With You" from MJ's "Off The Wall" album. They acknowledged that he was due to play the main O2 arena next door.
The evening ended with a big performance of Bobby's signature song "My Prerogative" which made the crowd go wild!
The Indigo2 is a brilliant venue with a club / dancefloor set up downstairs and a plush theatre upstairs. My seat in the Kings Row VIP area had the best view in the house.
Bobby, Johnny and Ralph are the best in the business at what they do and have come along way since the early New Edition days when they were often compared to the Jackson 5. I would compare Bobby to James Brown for his spirited performances, Johnny to Luther Vandross for his incredibly soulful voice and Ralph to Michael Jackson for his voice and skills as a frontman.
Anyone who appreciates old school R&B music, showmanship and the great songs penned by La Reid, Baby Face, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis should see this show.
A most enjoyable evening and I hope they come back to the UK soon and remember to play "If It Isn't Love"!
