Welcome back to Europe!!
Although the supporting act ( Sweet Savage) was very good, nothing could have prepared us for the main event - the gods of metal - Iron Maiden.
A recording of Iron Maiden's version of Doctor Doctor got the ball rolling - soon everyone rose to their feet to sing along. The crescendo was reached when the band ran onto the stage.
The Wicker Man opened the event and showed mighty singer Bruce Dickinson at his athletic finest - traversing the stage like a madman, jumping over the monitors, shooting up the steps onto the stage above and giving those legendary vocal chords a real workout. The band was on form and the sound system was being tested to destruction. Iron Maiden are back with a deadly vengeance!!
The event progressed - Ghost of the Navigator was next, followed by Wrathchild - a hark back to the 80s to appease the diehard veterans. Then El Dorado - off the forthcoming album. This got the crowd really going, though most already knew the words. It was pre-released on the internet and this crowd knew the score - it was downloaded by all, more than likely, within minutes of being released.
Dance of Death was next - this time guitarist Jannick Gers showed his fancy footwork as he hit those all-important chords. The Irish crowd went mad as the guitar motif was just like an Irish jig. A real crowd pleaser.
The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg was a light touch followed by the poignant "These Colours don't run" - thoughtful and thought-provoking in the current climate.
The next track, "Blood Brothers," was devoted to Ronnie James Dio who sadly passed away earlier this year. A stirring and heartfelt tribute was made by Bruce, though let us not forget, Ronne James Dio will live forever in the ears of true metal fans. His was one of the great metal voices - strong and distinctive and maybe more than capable of passing the real test - mortality.
Wildest Dreams gave way to possibly the song of the night "No More Lies." I am a bit of a fan of the older Iron Maiden stuff but this put me straight. It would have registered on seismometers in Dublin (if they monitor earthquakes there!?!?) Powerful and perfect, the crowd were shown who was boss that night and whipped into shape. I will no longer crave a set made solely of relics from the first four albums. Though I would no doubt enjoy it all the same!
Brave New World then passed the baton to a Maiden classic, "Fear of the Dark." Surely by now the crowd were sated in their desire for great music. The set closed with "Iron Maiden" and this brought the best out of the band - rip-roaring vocals, pulsing bass guitar, thumping drums and piercing lead and rhythm riffs.
In a moment of nemesis, the band left the stage. Depression set in immediately. Sadness prevailed. The crowd, like the bloodthirsty spectators of the real Roman Gladiators, demanded more. The crowd did not ask for more. It was a direct command.
This time, the loyal servants were the band themselves. Vincent Price's reading of the words "Woe to you, O earth and sea..........." brought the crowd back to life. "The Number of the Beast" was played with fearsome devotion. If that was not enough, "Hallowed be thy name" followed. Is it the best Maiden song ever? The best song ever? By now I felt guilty - I didn't pay enough for my ticket to deserve this.
The closer was "Running Free" during which Bruce larked around, introduced the band and was thoughtfully served a pint of the black stuff by a roadie. Bruce cheekily donned a police hat and mentioned that he had never been in front of so many criminals before. How did he know? I was innocent, m'lud.
Sadly, this closed the event for real. Ecstacy and sadness combined and the crowd migrated back to wherever they came from. The gut behind me on the bus summed it up - he would be "on a high for the next month." I can say no more.
