I'd never seen DP before but their reputation was such, that I felt this would be a good gig especially in Hammersmith Apollo, which is so much better than the much larger venues so many artists play these days. I was not disappointed, in fact this gig way, way surpassed my expectations. After excellent support, from 'The Crave', Gillan and co launched into 'Highway Star'. I was joyfully transfixed until the end of the show. The drums and bass of Paice and Glover were thunderous and rousing, the guitar of Steve Morse was sublime all backed up with the inspired Don Airey and last but not least, Ian Gillan - a great rock vocalist.
This was hard rock music of the highest order from start to finish. They played my favourite track of thier's, 'No one came' along with the cream of their back catalogue with one notable omission - Child in Time. But I'm not complaining. It was a wonderful moment when they struck up the opening riff of 'Smoke on the Water' to end the show They then came back to a rapturous reception to perform 'Hush' and 'Black Knight' for an encore. The band obviously adore playing live and have a special rapport with their audience. We had a night we'll remember for a long time - if you're tempted to go and see Deep Purple, go...they still rock.
