After the initial disappointment of Toot not being able to perform due to lack of voice, we were offered a couple of tunes from the Maytals with his daughter taking the lead. She had a fantastic voice, but there was little consolation in atmosphere from a few in the crowd. I felt embarrassed for supporting act as it was obviously no-bodies fault, it was something we had to deal with. The main frustration was really that the compare had built up the supporting act before they came on, only to let us down with the sad news, we wish that we had been told straight from the start!
This all blurred into insignificance as soon as the main act came on - Mr. Cliff was in fine form and we were treated to a host all the hits, starting with a Desmond Decker cover 'You Can Get It If You Really Want', an early ska selection which got everybody dancing. At the start of each tune, JC held his hands up surrounding his forehead where a red jewel was positioned on his bandanna. This focused his energy from the intro of each song.... what a delivery and what charisma, the guy jumped and danced and strutted through each tune with the delivery of a true master Rastafarian musician at work.
There were a few slow numbers, one focused on the troubles of the Afghan war another was preaching 'peace and love'. One of the last tunes was a percussion number with JC sat at the front of the stage on his own bongo. The band were fantastic, the lighting set he mood, his voice was soothing and powerful, what a great night !!
We danced our socks off with a typically mixed Wolverhampton Midlands crowd that were out for a good night.
I highly recommend seeing this band, you will be swept along with the atmosphere.
