Louden may be older than his old man now,but he is still at the top of his game.I thought the reading of his dad's writings from his days at Life magazine was a nice touch ,and very amusing.The voice is still there,the new songs are great.I was glad Louden took control when the eager audience wanted to hear their favourite songs,and for me this was good.He took a couple of requests one was White Winos,still a Louden classic.
Louden's daughter Lucy opened the show and what a lovely set she did,even had the audience singing I belong to Glasgow to her.
Lucy joined Louden onstage a couple times and this was one of the evenings highlights.Louden's songs can have you laughing one minute and crying the next,he is such a good song writer.

This concert was really good. Loudon's daughter came on first and was sweet and sharp and funny, with a beautiful voice. I could have heard her all evening! But I'm glad she gave Loudon a chance, as he was brilliant - intelligent, and original, with some amazing soliloquies. A brilliant evening.

received urgent call to leave concert hall just before Loudon came on so had to leave. We thoroughly enjoyed Lucy's warm up. She is talented, witty and engaging.
So when will he be back? and this time I will not look at phone till end of concert.

this was a show that surpassed my expectations. I had come to his music late and enjoyed his last CD so when he was appearing in Aberdeen, we decided to make the effort to go and see him live. He was a revelation-it was one of the best shows I have attended- just one man with his guitar and his music- just brilliant.

Third time for us with LW III in Glasgow and even better than ever. Strong voice and melodic guitar as always, with poetic, humorous and moving lyrics, new and old. Who needs complicated speeches against the gun lobby when we have LW III's new Christmas song! New "soliloquies" from LW II's Life articles a creative and special addition. We saw Lucy at Brel before, and she's even better on this bigger stage with a bigger sound. Altogether a fine evening and one we wanted to go on and on. Aberdeen the day after will have will loved it!
He played half a dozen new songs, one being the second song of the evening - Always in a Hurry - a song written from the perspective of a beggar in a subway with his empathetic observations on a hurrying office worker. Also did the Firearm Christmas song he wrote last December. My family and I loved the Christmas song, and the contrast between his first rousing song of the evening and the second, "Always in a Hurry" was quite striking and quite emotional.

These days it's pretty difficult to find a consistently good singer songwriter and performer but Mr Loudon Wainwright III definitely ticks all the boxes!
This is the third time I've seen Mr Wainwright perform and his show is still moving, exciting, funny, honest and an education in the art of performance. I took two singer songwriter pals and one described it as "like getting a degree in an hour and a half. Truly learning ftom the best".
If at anytime you're considering buying an LW3 album or, better yet, a gig ticket do not hesitate, just do it. It will not be a waste of your time and money. And keep your fingers crossed he's got his daughter Lucy to do support and a wee duet

He forgot the words to at least 5 songs completely dropped one because he couldn't remember the intro, dieting with Lucy he froze and her "oh dear " comment summed up the night , Lucy used a mobile phone to help her remember the words to one particular song she was supposed to be duetting on. Very unprofessional show, loved him since the 70s but will never pay good money to see him again

A bit disappointing. Loudon always uses his life as his material, but all the musing on getting old was a bit depressing and he didn’t seem to be putting a great deal into the show. Mentioning that York was a stopover between Glasgow and London (all in one day) gave the impression that he was probably tired. I wasn’t sure if we were meant to hear him say to his daughter “nearly over now”, which reinforced this. I’ve been to see him before and he was great. Might think again next time though.

At the ripe old age of 64, Loudon Wainwright III sings about the inevitable with a morbid sense of humour that takes the edge off the touchy subject of death.
His youngest daughter, Lucy Wainwright Roche, opened the night with a brief and pleasing set. She was followed, fittingly, by her father and the song ‘Being a Dad’.
Early on he established something of a theme: ‘’I have a lot of songs about death and decay tonight’’. Staring his mortality right in the eye, Loudon lauded his own achievement of ‘’being older than my dad ever was’’ and starkly confessed ‘’I’m guilty of outliving my ex’’.
Ever since the release of his first studio album in 1970, 20 more albums have been born of the mind of one of the wittiest musicians there has ever been. Looking around me in the Grand Opera House, I had never seen such consistent amusement on the faces of an audience. Loudon certainly knows how to make a face too. His outrageous expression’s and ironic dad dancing make him more than just a musician, but a real entertainer too. Loudon Wainwright III is perfectly understated, and can go from the heartfelt and poignant to the hilarious and daft in seconds.
What you expect, or what at least I expect, is a touring musician to plug their new music. In Loudon’s case, 10 Songs For The New Depression is his most recent work. It was refreshing to see him not play a single track off the record. His cult status means plugging isn’t necessary when you have the consistent and committed fan base he does. Towards the end of the gig he invited the audience to shout out names of songs they would like him to play. This was met by a non synchronous chorus of song titles that could have gone on for hours due to the expanse of his catalogue. A truly prolific songwriter who was met with rapturous applause as he left the stage, only to sing ‘’Shut up and go to bed’’ for the encore.

Loudon was good but his daughter, Lucy, was rather weak - especially considering that she is quite experienced. She spoke too much and too slowly instead of getting on with the songs and her appeals for sympathy began to get tiring. She was also shabbily dressed. She needs to smarten up her act and be more professional.
The 30 min gap between her 30 minutes and Loudon coming on was too long (after only 30 mins of act).
Loudon was good and did two encores which is always nice.
They need to move the box/table that blocks the view of him when he used the piano.

As both Loudon and his daughter Lucy alluded to, this was supposed to be a Festival occasion - yeah, right. A barely-half-full theatre, combined with sub-Arctic temperatures in the hall (that lead to most of the audience sitting in their coats, huddled round steaming cups of cocoa), led to a very low-key performance, with some half-hearted singing contributions from the audience. Lucy was sweet but very under-powered and as my partner commented "I'd love to take her out and buy her some colourful clothes that fit her - Perth has some lovely charity shops", she needs to work on her confidence and showmanship. As for LW3, he was his usualy funny and musical self but did seem baffled by the lack of atmosphere. Perhaps most of the folk in the audience were worried about what time the bus was coming to return them to the Care Home? A festival occasion it was most certainly not.

First I must declare an interest - I am a long-term LWIII fan, and have seen him on stage about 8 times, including a solo performance at the Festival Hall around 1992.
But the originality of his songwriting seemed to have tailed off in recent years, so I thought it would be the right time to see a joint performance with Richard Thompson. I liked Fairport Convention many moons ago, and last year enjoyed RT's 1000 years of Popular Music.

Sorry to RT fans, but the show was notable for the gulf between the 2 performers in terms of quality of material, voice/diction, stage presence, and general connection with the audience. Apart from the "crawl back" song, which was a show-stopper, there was nothing memorable in the RT set.
When they were on stage together, it was a different matter - RT's excellent guitar adding musical interest to the LW performance. But rather an imbalanced show I'm afraid.

My main motivation for the Meltdown has been the opportunity to hear Richard Thompson and his chosen participants in the festival. Loudon W was absent from the Kate McGarrigle trubute but did make a belated contribution early in this session. He was in good voice, showed good humour and added another plus to my high level of enjoyment of the festival. Humour pervaded the gig despite plenty of music references to Loudon's own dysfunctional childhood though for the most part he kept clear of references to his other musical family members - though is clearly a very proud gradnfather of Archangelo. When Richard T joined him the gig really took off to new heights and Richard T's own set has had me still humming 'Wall of Death' days later despite a subsequent evening with Elvis Costello that I hope to add notes about on a separate occasion.
Back to this gig - Loud and Rich ended with a soaring finale. Very impressed that Richard T is organising AND appearing and guesting throughout the festival - great stuff indeed!

Excellent concert - Loudon Wainwright was incredible as ever. The only problem was, he only played the first half. After that it was Richard Thompson. Given that this was billed and sold as a Loudon Wainwright concert, I felt somewhat cheated. It was almost as if Loudon was the support act........

This was a great show. I didn't know much, if anything, about Loudon Wainwright and just a little more about Richard Thompson but they both came up with the goods, and I had a fantastic evening. Loudon was very funny both in between and during songs and most of his songs were very insightful and thought-provoking. I can see now why he is so famous.
Richard started off on a quieter note, I think, but his guitar playing is wonderful and he can sing too. Some of his songs were really beautiful.

Waste of money. £37.50 for hour and quarter. No encore. Lacklustre performance. Loved Loudon for years since early 70's but he didn't even have to work here for his fee. Total waste of time - came down from E Mids for this. Never again. What's going on at Festival Hall - are they trying to cram in two concertys per night or something? (No). Meltdown - boo.
