Moonlight illuminated the gleaming Mercedes Benz building that, along with the polished cars, acted as a backdrop for a show just as gleaming and polished. Rain tried its best to dampen spirits as it lashed down on the open arena. But as the man known as Leonard Cohen casually walked onto the stage a loud roar built up, not emitted by one of the majestic cars but from hundreds of fans applauding and cheering a man who until 2008 had not performed live for fifteen years, yet this was far from evident from the tight opening songs. As the crowd took their seats and wrapped their rain coats around them they were rewarded with a lowering of the trademark trilby hat and a slight bow, while Mr Cohen thanked people for braving the weather. His eyes seemed to sparkle as he took the microphone to sing In my Secret Life as if he was drawing us into his own life; we were the guests of a humble performer whose aim was to please us. His experienced band, who have played over eighty shows with him, moved through the set list with ease and confidence while each being able to show their own skills, whether it be performing cartwheels or awe inspiring saxophone solo’s. As we basked in these interludes it was possible to catch the man himself holding his hat to his chest watching their performance with joy. Each person seemed to have a favourite song and I suspect no-one was left disappointed with a set list that spanned material from four decades. Nor were the seats occupied solely by his lifelong diehard fans, an eclectic and diverse age range sung along with the gravelly voice that carried over the open arena. Hallelujah seemed a particular highlight, possibly due to the successful recent cover version, in uniting a crowd behind a masterful performer. Showing as much delight at performing the songs as the audience were listening to them was a professional, warm and often humorous host who skipped on and off stage and bobbed up and down to the music. In a cold, rainy and cloudy night it was possible to see a star that genuinely sparkled and gleamed.
