There is something remarkable about Joan Baez. She is living history with an ethereal voice, and that mindset had permeated every person in attendance, even before the doors opened. She weaves some kind of magic around her listener and everyone - from 20 somethings to folk music veterans - were in absolute awe of her from the moment she stepped on the stage.
This tour marked 50 years of her music, and she hasn't lost her touch. Although her vocal range was markedly deeper, it was just as clear as it had been in the 60s and the audience ate up every note. As a performer, Ms. Baez was at her peak, hypnotising us with tales of years gone by... She made an auditorium of hundreds feel like a group of 15 with her personal and endearing attitude. And attitude she had plenty of. She snapped back at audience comments, teased their accents (Scottish), and then gave us an extra half hour of music.
She left no stone unturned, playing many of her most powerful tunes. Her band provided a subtle and impressive backing, only to step away and allow her to play on her own for certain tracks. She left you wanting nothing, only more. Truly one of those events I will remember for the rest of my life (and I'm only in my 20s).
