While the supporting act took a while to come on (okay so we *did* get there at 7.30...) it was most definitely worth the wait...
'The incredible' JFB came on stage and whipped the crowd into an instant frenzy through his extremely technical and skillful VJ'ing set; for those of you unfamiliar with VJ'ing vs DJ'ing, the VJ plays video clips in perfect sync to sound clips, usually via a clever piece of vinyl that sends a timing pulse to a computer, which allows the sound and video to be manipulated in realtime, by the VJ. Lesson ends :)
To say that JFB's set was incredible would quite simply be an understatement. He didn't even use headphones - and as someone who can DJ, and understands the equipment being used, I can tell you with my hand on my heart it was extremely impressive. If you want to get a comparison, check out some of the old Coldcut videos like "Atomic Moog" on YouTube - that'll show you exactly how the sound/video sync thing works...
Then, after what seemed like an eternity - albeit an extremly enjoyable one - Beardyman came on.
He is incredible. Plain and simple. I first saw him doing the 808 in the kitchen routine a couple of years back, which amazed me on account of how accurate the sounds that he made, were. As soon as one of the guys at work sent a link round regarding this gig, I was sold. Buying tickets. Bought tickets. Wicked :)
So Beardyman gave the crowd a proper assault on their senses. I was lucky enough to be almost at the front of the crowd (love that about the Jazz Cafe - it's such an intimate venue) so I could see absolutely everything he was doing. Just the fact that his beatbox skills are so good, would have been worth paying the ticket price for, but add to that his unique methods of crowd involvement and you have an utterly amazing, and unforgettable night on your hands. My only wish is that the Jazz Cafe had recorded the night so we could buy a copy on DVD at a later date. Food for thought perhaps??
All in all, worth every penny of the asking price. Not sure why it cost me £2.50 to print the tickets out myself though........
