I believe theatre-goers come to the theatre with the feeling of wanting to "escape" into the performance, and are entitled to expect the performers to offer them that
Carlos Acosta is gifted physically and dynamically and we expected him to be able to express all the emotions he feels from the best of music, and so make us feel part of something special too.
So I feel sad that instead he performed in what I can only describe as an ugly way, depicting the stressed movements of a character in a stressful environment, accompanied by technically contrived sound and images, which have no means of stirring the emotions.
Carlos attracts a loyal following, who roundly applauded him, but I think it would be a mistake to believe they felt everything they wanted from a visit to the theatre. This was simply a wasted opportunity and left us feeling down.
