As a Mark Rylance fan, I knew I'd enjoy Jerusalem even if it were just for his performance but nothing could have prepared me for this brilliant play performed by a wonderful cast! I have seen hundreds of plays over the last 25 years but I would go as far as to say that this is the best: funny, moving, intense, thought provoking. Excellent staging. Great choice and use of music. Mackenzie Crook was incredibly good as Ginger the wannabe DJ and all the cast were strong. As for Rylance himself, there are no words to describe his genius, this was simply him at his best ever, which is saying something! In the opening sequence I got goose bumps on my goose bumps and as the curtain fell, I and the rest of the audience stood to applaud this perfect piece of theatre. I am so glad to have seen this. I would urge everyone contemplating seeing this to play to get a ticket if you can.

Jerusalem lived up to all expectations, and more. Having come up from Wiltshire for the day to see it, it was enormously entertaining to hear about all our local events that I know so well - the Carnival (including the Wheelbeero race), the pubs, the towns... For the first two acts one was only aware of continual laughter, as the comedy erred on the risque, and at times obscene. The lead character was just phenomenal. I couldn't believe he would be doing yet another performance in the evening... He put so much into the character of 'Rooster' Byron. I really hope this play gets another run, so that others may share in this experience. I haven't stopped talking about it! I took a friend along who had seen it the first time round before it headed to Broadway. She jumped at the chance. Again, she has ties in Wiltshire so it tickled her too. Thank you to all the cast, and the most unforgettable stage set.... I loved it!

Whole cast was magnificent but it is a tour de force from Mark Rylance. We've seen him several times at the Globe but in this he is transformed. This play is very funny, touching and thought provoking. In years to come people will talk about Mark Rylances performance in Jerusalem - see it if you can!!

The best acting I have ever witnessed, however I did not enjoy the play at all. Wasn't exactly sure what point it was trying to make, even after three and a quarter hours.

We were recommended to see this play by our son (age 38) and in the belief that Mark Rylance was extremely good. We had previously seen him on tour in Nottingham.
He certainly was well above the rest of the cast, the only exceptions were Alan David,(the Professor)and Max Baker (Wesley).Mackenzie Crook also ran.
So you will perhaps say that age has something to do with it but both my wife and I are not above a bit of lip.

It is very hard to know what to say that hasn't already been said about this production.
It really is fantastic.
It grips you gently and then holds you there.
It's beautiful... what Shakespeare's play would have been to the audiences of the time - relevant, entertaining, challenging and revealing.

The central performance is a masterclass, but that doesn't really do it justice. It's utterly believable.

I have been going to the theatre for the best part of 40 years, watching drama, comedy, tragedy, panto - the lot. I have never seen a greater acting performance than Mark Rylance's Rooster Byron and I doubt that I ever will. He can make you despise him, pity him, love him, root for him and wish ill on him within a few seconds. A thrilling, moving, exhilerating and thought-provoking evening that makes three hours fly by. I came out of the theatre wishing I could go straight back in and see it all again.

Breathtakingly brilliant, we were dumbstruck in awe at the end. The best play I have ever seen and some of the most memorable acting. An absolute must see !

This play was the most extraordinary disappointment. After all the hype and the spectacular revues in the Sunday Times I persuaded 3 friends to travel from manchester to london to see it. How embarrassed I was as we walked out. It was not gripping, funny, intriguing or even interesting. Totally bored and bewildered by the lack of any conclusion whatsoever. I suggest you go only if endless bad language makes you laugh. The 3 hours could have been edited down to two, or the whole second act left out. Why this won all the accolades it did in America and was brought back for a glorious re-run beats me.

This is the first time we have read a critic's review and said we have to go see this play. It is beyond compare. Mark Rylance was fantastic and Mackenzie Crook an absolute relaxation (RIP Gareth from the Office). The htrre hours flew brand the cast took us from hilarity to sinister and then poignancy. A once in a lifetime theatre experience.

Jerusalem was the best piece of theatre that I have seen in many years. Mark Rylance is phenomenal as Johnny 'Rooster' Byron and the rest of the cast are equally as captivating. This is truly a play not to be missed.

What a great piece of theatre this is. The play is in 3 acts, spread over 3 hours 10 minutes with just a 15 minute and a 5 minute interval between acts. It is very difficult to hold an audience’s attention for that length of time but be assured you won’t be able to take your eyes off it and the time just flies by. Surely that’s an obvious sign of a great play.
The set never changes. You’re transferred to a clearing in a wood near a housing estate with Johnny Rooster Byron’s old battered metallic caravan. The grass that overlaps the front of the stage is actually real and all the overhanging trees in the set look real as well! How do they do that indoors in the Autumn/Winter?
The first act is almost a total comedy but does allow you to acquaint yourself with the main characters and start to appreciate what a great script this really is. The wit of the writing is a real feature. Be warned though that the language throughout is quite savage but nevertheless does add to the realism of the characters.
Within seconds of the opening, the curtain is raised to reveal a rollicking & riotous party at Johnny’s rustic homestead. It doesn’t take you long to get to know the ‘Rooster’ and all of his quirky ways, his outrageous stories , his love of booze, drugs, entertaining his admirers and his love of being the centre of attention. The young kids who go there to party on his drugs and booze must think he’s great - or do they?
As acts 2 and 3 unfold the comedy gradually turns to drama but still leaves plenty of room for more outrageous tales and infamous past deeds of the ‘Rooster.’ His young sidekicks keep feeding him with the opportunity to be even more fanciful and charismatic.
You are gradually introduced to Johnny’s immediate family and are slowly able learn more about him. He obviously has a riotous and infectious lifestyle but will it all catch up with him and for just how long will the locals tolerate him and his behaviour?
By the end of act 2 there’s an uneasy feeling that it’s all going to end in tears. How much longer can he get away with it? By the end of act 3 I’m sure that you’ll be pondering how utterly fickle people really are and what happened to the expression of ‘That’s what Friends ‘are For.’
You’ll also be pondering, could anyone have really helped or changed ‘Johnny Rooster Byron?’
Mark Rylance is utterly superb in this role and doing a matinee and evening performance must be totally draining. It’s interesting to note that he has no understudy for his role? The entire cast put their stamp impressively on their characters but there’s no getting away from who the star of the show is.
I can only think of Tracie Bennett in ‘End of the Rainbow’ who has come close to that performance in the dramas that I’ve seen this year. It’s been an utter privilege to see them both – Quite a year and unlikely to be repeated I’d say -totally memorable though.

When it comes to Jerusalem - you can and should believe the hype! It is a powerful and thought-provoking play. Like nothing I have ever seen before. The lead Rooster Byron (Mark Rylance) is mesmerising and commands the audience in every scene. Loved it!
