We arrived at door opening time 7pm for start time of 7.30. However, the concert did not begin until 8pm by which time we were feeling a bit stiff despite the generous leg room. Having paid top price for stalls tickets two rows from the front and just right of centre we were most disappointed that we could not see most of the orchestra due to the u-shaped seating on stage which was placed towards the left side – I had a great view of the four vocalists, and the backs of the cellists! I only saw Nigel when he came to the front of the stage! Of the 16 Orchestra of Life musicians I could only see 3 violins, trumpet, guitar, double bass. Shame on you Usher Hall for boasting there are no restricted view seats! This ruined what should have been a magical evening.
That said, the music was wonderful and sound excellent with even the quietest pieces clearly audible. The new “Four Elements” filled the first half of the evening – didn’t like the vocalist solo piece, but the rest was interesting. After the interval we had “The Four Seasons” played mainly straight but with a few quirky moments, and a few other impromptu pieces mixed in with Nigel’s idiosyncratic banter. He received a worthy standing ovation and continued thereafter with several other pieces – seemed like he was making up for the late start! Nigel did not disappoint – what a talent, what enthusiasm, what passion!!!
