I thought I'd add to the one solitary review of Karine, as she deserves to be better-known. The obvious comparison is with Kate Rusby - Karine's voice isn't quite so extraordinary but is still very good, and as a songwriter I think she's better. However, she's much less well-known - perhaps because she doesn't seem to be all that confident of her talent. She's also spent a lot of time on other things; I've seen her a couple of times at festivals singing folk songs instead of her own much better songs. However, this time it was a concert of her own material.
One advantage of a lack of fame is seeing someone in a tiny (but sold-out) venue - there was no stage as such, and I could practically have reached out and touched her. She was with her brother on guitar and another woman (sorry, I've forgotten the name) on vocals and a whole variety of instruments - the sound was very rich and varied for such a minimal band. She was mainly promoting her new Traces album (of which I now have signed copy) but also did things from earlier albums, although not the title track from the Faultlines album which was what first made me notice her. She also did a request for a rather embarassed woman in the front row, and a cover of Love Me Do. The songs were good, the performance excellent and there was a lot of good-natured banter - what's not to like?
