Excellent show in a beautiful theatre

Rowan Atkinson was arguably the main draw for many theatre-goers to this gentle story set in a 60's language school in Cambridge.
If you came along expecting a comedic farce with plenty of Rowan's "Mr Bean" moments then you'd be sorely disappointed. Instead you were treated to some great acting from a fairly well-known cast which included Facility Montagu (Lynne from I'm Alan Partridge) and Matthew Cottle (Game On).
A story that was an entertaining mixture of humour and sadness. Recommended.

Despite a good review in the Telegraph, and a respect for Mr Atkinson's talent, I was a little disappointed in this play. I felt this was very much in the Ayckbourn genre, not in itself a recommendation. At no time did I feel any sense of reality or empathy with the characters. The play was well staged and rehearsed, but I am sure that there are better local productions. When Mr Atkinson gave way to the occasional laugh or titter, it was embarrassing, as if he had to have at least one Mr Bean reprise.

The show was pretty good. But slightly slow at times. The storyline I feel could have been more in depth. Also, I feel as though a stage change would benefit the storyline.

This play by Simon Gray, set in the staff room of a school for teaching English to foreign students was a wonderful mixture of humour and pathos. Each of the characters had some personal trauma to deal with and as their stories unfolded I found myself totally caught up in them. Every actor gave a finely balanced study with some telling touches, but at the centre of it was Rowan Atkinson as St John Quartermaine, soon exposed as being a completely useless teacher, but a jolly nice chap - and very lonely. While he did fall into his Mr Bean tricks at times, his performance was nicely judged - here was a master of comedy timing - but also very moving, especially at the end. I found it memorable and thought provoking.

The play was excellent and Rowan Atkinson was brilliant in it as were all the other characters. However the seats in the theatre were extremely 'snug' considering the price of the tickets!

This play was very funny and well acted. All characters did a splendid job as did Rowan Atkinson. Rowan is not playing to the audience, but is just the main character interacting with the others. All scenes are in the same location with different lighting & props.
Ending is a little sad for a comedy.
There are several scenes with an interval in the middle and the bars are handy for drinks & ice-cream/snacks and the toilets are close too. Programmes are £4

Although Rowan Atkinson was the main star, the success of this production lay in the excellent ensemble work of the whole cast. Well observed characters, humour and poignancy made this a memorable theatrical evening.

Rowan Atkinson's plays the lead character beautifully in this excellent play, set in an English language school in Cambridge. Set in the staff room, Quartermaine's attempts to interact and be part of the other teacher's lives is funny and ultimately sad.
Will Keen, as new teacher Derek Meadle, was hilarious as the accident-prone new temporary teacher, as was Felicity Montagu as highly strung Melanie Garth. Malcolm Sinclair was also brilliant as the overbearing Eddie. The acting was first class overall and this was in the end a poignant and thought provoking play

This play isn't for everyone. If you're looking for just the usual light entertainment with a clear story-line served up for you to sit back and put your brain in airplane mode then this will disappoint. The scenes of the play are temporally separated in time and what happens in between is largely up to your own imagination. The evolution of each characters story is wonderfully portrayed by the cast, and everyone leaving the theatre will have a slightly different perspective on the sub-plots. Some people may think this just represents a play without a strong script, but in my opinion it underscores the artistic roots of theatre.
Don't go expecting some sort of spin-off of Mr Bean, or with any other pre-conceived ideas at all, and you may be pleasantly surprised!

Fantastic, Multi faceted play - sad, yet many laugh out loud moments as characters revealed more and more of themselves as the play progressed yet kept up their selfish introspection as poor Rowan Atkinson's character became more and more lonely. Play left me thinking long after about the characters and how it reflects upon us all in real life. A complete gem - do your absolute best to get tickets!!! Would certainly see it again. Theatre itself is beautiful too.

It was ok, dreary first half, terrible theatre especially as I am on crutches at present and there is zero care for disabled.

Went to see the show on 23rd Feb 2013 with my son. This show is totally fantastic. We went because we love Rowan Atkinson, but we felt that all the actors were amazing and we really enjoyed the show. I would recommend it to anyone.

I'm not a theatre lover really - usually wish I'd stayed at home with a good (sometimes even a bad) DVD. But I doggedly attend 4 times a year in the hope of improving myself. After past successes seeing Wayne Sleep in Caberet. Maggie Smith in The Woman in Black and Joan Collins in a Noel Coward thing, I decided that following the stars isn't a bad plan - they, or their agent usually get them a decent gig and if nothing else I feel I can tick a celebrity sighting box. Quartermaine's Terms, and Rowan Atkinson, did not disappoint. He doesn't have the most lines or action, but is really well supported by the rest of the cast; there are plenty of laughs in the lines, not of the Mr Bean variety, and plenty of pathos.
I shall return to my staff room and take a closer look next week.

The whole ensemble was very good, the set was believable, but whilst there were flashes of comedy, the whole thing was tragic and full of pathos.

Although Rowan Atkinson is undoubtedly the star of the show, credit must go to all the other members of the cast. This is a superbly written and executed performance. So refreshing that humour can be produced in a modern way, in the West End. We often have to endure "modern humour" as plain vulgar or childish but this was just excellent.
