This was the practice session for the Olympic Mountain Biking Championships. I have never watched mountain biking before but I became quite 'hooked' on it. It is a great course for spectators, and apparently the competitors rated it highly too. If you get the chance to get tickets for the main event in 2012, then do so...

Good event in preparation for the Olympics. Plenty of space to move around, but not sure how busy it will be for the Olympics!

The event was really well organised. Right from our arrival at Leigh-on-Sea train station we were greeted then directed to a free shuttle bus that dropped us at the event entrance. Staff and volunteers were very helpful and friendly from beginning to end.
The weather was fantastic, infact we had to seek shade under a tree in between each race.
My friends and I all said how much we enjoyed the whole experience and were pleased to be at a fantastic local but international event.

To see all of the route there was a lot of walking, this to be expected for such an event but must have been difficult for some spectators. A fabulous course with plenty of variety; I hope the riders enjoyed this course as much as the spectators. What a venue! great views of the Hadleigh and the estuary as well as an enthrawling event.
Sorry there was not a walk in tiered section either side of the start/finish line. without this only a few were able to view the final approach where the riders would have enjoyed more spectators enthusiasm for their efforts.
Overall a well manage event all-be-it only a 5th of the numbers expected in 2012. I hope the train/bus park and ride link works as well in 2012.
Only one comment from a long term Hadleigh resident: Our one-way system is a nuisance; would it not be easier for residents useing the town and for the park-and -ride buses to have temporary traffic lights at the London road junction of Castle Road (Poonah Indian rest. corner) allowing the buses to travel from the farm, up Castle Lane, Right into Castle Road then Right onto the London Road Southend bound? This would then free the town traffic and make an easier route for the bus service leaving the event.

A very exciting event on a difficult course and in a great venue, with spectacular views across the Thames Estuary.
Thoroughly recommend the walk to the venue from Leigh Station across Hadleigh Downs and past Hadleigh Castle and call in at the Salvation Army Farm for a quick snack en route!

Brilliant venue, able to walk around and see the whole race easily. Only a quarter of the people attended than when when the Olympics are actually there so hard to say what facilities will be like on the big days. But if you're lucky enough to have tickets reckon you'll enjoy it.

Thought form the moment we left Park and Ride the event was run really well. Great to be at the live event, we were able to get right next to the action, course was easy to navigate. Came away thinking we are going to run the Olympics well - we can put on a show!! Confidence building.
Atmosphere was a little stifled but nonetheless didn't spoil overall enjoyment.

What I like about this event, is that you had the freedom to roam around and see the whole track. This makes it nicer than sitting down in just one seat, and I felt more involved in the race as I had a nice work out as well. And it was outdoors.
Furthermore the athletes took this event seriously (even though it was a preparatory event), which made it a real competition without much crass commercialisation.

An absolutely fantastic day out for the whole family. Around 5 thousand turned up but there were still plenty of spaces for people to watch when the actual event occurs, with the estimated 10 thousand who will visit the event next year. There will be room for everyone to watch, something I was initially worried about.
The timing between each event (women's then men's) was perfect. There was plenty of time to buy refreshments and such. However the little show which happened before the races, in the middle between the two and then after the men's was actually the exact same event, word for word. This became highly tedious so hopefully they vary this next year.
The worst thing that brought the day down were the prices of the food and also the lack of variety. I bought 2 bottles of soft drink and 2 standard chocolate muffins. This came to over £9. The prices were clearly London prices which was totally unnecessary. There was only one food stand in the area I was standing so I am unsure whether there were any other food stands around, but it was just bacon rolls. Me being vegetarian had no choice for food, which is a shame for such a big event, there was plenty of room for other food stalls, which again hopefully they'll have next year, and at better value. We have paid for the tickets, so surely that should be enough to disallow the London prices.
Other than this, it was an amazing day. Would recommend taking lunch, make a picnic out of it, possible a tent also for coverage as the day of the event was incredibly hot. There was only one large gazebo to cover from the sun, not enough for the high volume of spectators. Would recommend people to move around on the day to get a varied view, don't just stand by the start/finish as the most exciting parts of the track are elsewhere! But there is plenty of time to investigate the whole track during the day.
Hopefully this review has helped you, and those who are going next year have a fantastic time!

Transfer from Leigh-on-Sea railway station by bus smooth and efficient. Layout of course magnificent. Could walk to any part of course to watch. Special stand for wheelchair users. Crossing points well organised, no mishaps. Could not see complete course without walking to part behind hill. Food outlets slightly stretched. Marshalls helpful and polite.Good weather made it a very pleasant day out. No way of telling whether four times as many spectators next year will feel the same way.

The organisation was excellent and from one viewpoint we could see at least half of the course including the start and the finish. The course was also well designed from the point of view of spectators.
One improvement would be to have either a nearer bus stop or some form of transport for people who are disabled and find the long walk from the bus stop and back difficult.
All in all I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I hadn't realised what a great spectator sport mountain biking would be as I had gone along with some enthusiastic members of my family.
We chose to drive to the The Park and Ride Scheme on Canvey Island which proved a good start to the day with well-organised parking attendants and double-decker red buses waiting to take us the short journey to Hadleigh.
The walk from the bus stop to the actual site was probably longer than some elderly people could comfortably undertake but it was a nice sunny day and no problem for us. All the staff along the route were friendly and communicative and when we got into the actual area, people were well spread out and there was an instant feeling of being involved with the racing. It was easy to find vantage spots to watch from and to move about the circuit so the children also thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The staff had obviously had good training in being nice to the customers! We thought the litter collection/disposal was very efficient and there were no big queues to buy drinks or snacks - there also seemed to be plenty of toilets. Our whole impression was very favourable - it was a really good day out for the family and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone. Well done to everyone concerned!

Had a great time at this event. Very well organised, no real problems at all. Would suggest having some toilets at the entry point where people will queue before the ticket and bag check and more food outlets would be great. Not going to the 2012 event but this more than made up for it. We were able to walk around and choose where to watch with no problems. Anyone going next year would be well advised to have a look around and try moving round the course to see all aspects of the race. Not sure how easy that will be next year with up to 20,000 people

My 2 daughters, husband, mother and I had a fantastic day out at the Hadleigh Farm Mountain Bike International.It was a beautiful hot sunny day-(Of course I am not so sure that it would have been so good had the weather been horrible and raining) It was a fantastic and experience- great for my girls to see the area that an Olympic event is going to take place.
The athletes were incredible and I don't know how they did it! The whole event was very exciting!
The only down side was the food and drinks stands- unfortunately there really wasn't enough stands to cope with that amount of people- especially on such a hot day - we took a supply of food and drink with us but really needed to drink more.
The event area was very well organised so it was pretty much hassle free to get there and back- it seems the park and ride went down well!
Only wish I had tickets to see the Olympic event itself!!

great place to see so much of the track, it is not always possible to see so much at mountain bike event. The class of riders was so good. There was so much room, I feel they could get another 5000 people in with no problem. So why not offer another 5000 tickets and put them on sale to the people of Castle point and leigh first, this should not bring any more traffic and also give a chance to get ticket as many local bike riders did not get any
