We are more used to Toumani Diabate's gentle kora playing, but couldn't resist the awesome lineup promised by this concert. Devotees of the Buena Vista Social Club will not be surprised that the music was lively and loud throughout, and that Toumani was pretty much drowned out. But the sheer musical brilliance of all the artists made up for that and the arrangement of the songs gave plenty of opportunity for them to show off their individual skills. Kouyate's n'goni soared above the other instruments; Tounkara played his guitar with the fire of someone half his age and Kasse Mady Diabate's voice was very strong. A kora/n'goni ensemble was especially impressive. The Cubans, led by Ochoa in black cowboy hat and clothes, were polished and exuberant. Most of all, the two types of music blended as if destined to be put together into one whole. The Albert Hall was pretty much packed to capacity and we were all on our feet dancing long before the end. Memorable.
